I'm just surprised we didn't try to poach someone or even dip into the pockets heavily. Look at what the Saban hire did in terms of program revenue for football.
Again, UA football to UA basketball is a really bad comparison.
And I think we often forget how important it is for AD’s to be realistic in these searches. Sure, on the surface, it seems like a great idea to check with Donovan, then Izzo, then Beard, then Matta, etc etc and make all these guys say no. But when you dig a little deeper, receiving 4-5 denials is pretty bad for the perception of the job.
I’m personally very happy with the way Byrne handled it and how he arrived at his guy.
This hit the nail on the head...Bama basketball isn't a "Big Name" in college basketball, no MAJOR program history in the last 25 years to speak of but we are still in the SEC, then consider Avery had to agree on a buyout, dropping the price. Byrne did a phenomenal job IMO

Since CMNewton we have never hired a “name” coach away from ranked school.
I am as pleased as punch with the way our AD handled the whole process. Avery let go in a timely fashion, his buyout handled in a professional manner and his replacement found and hired.
We will give our new coach a chance to bring back pride in a program we all love.
Good job Byren.

will say B today with potential for better. He seems to have the “it” factor and from all indications is a teacher of the game, something we definitely needed
I was close . Definitely an A+ hire though

I'd give it A-. Watching their games, I like the offensive spacing and guard work. He's going to need several shooters to make it work. They look a lot like Auburn. Not a lot of height or inside post scoring. They are always tighter on D which creates turnovers but they give up a ton of shots around the rim. Their offside help defense could he better but I believe it's a little by design. It's a nicely designed system but we will struggle if we don't hit our threes. You can tell that he had guards with a lot of experience this year. They excel in EFFORT, transition, spacing and dribble drive. They struggle on the inside on both sides of the ball. I think we will he happy with the results
Damn....pretty spot on

I think we all agreed that we loved what we saw, we just weren't sure if it would all translate.

Ole Jake LaMotta wasn't big on the hire of Nate.

My Grade: B
It’ll take some Natty’s to go any higher. Regular season success with no postseason jewelry makes us nothing more than the 90s Utah Jazz

The similarities between Oats & Saban are there.
Saban takes over mediocre Bama fooball team in 06.
2 years later we're playing Florida, winner plays for the National Championship.
Oats takes over mediocre Bama basketball team in 19.
2 years later wins the SEC, solid as a 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament.
Both coach hard, passionate, perfectionist, respect the other team, relentless recruiters, have their players attention/respect.
As I said 2 years ago, obvious solid A hire by Byrne.

Doesn’t matter how the barn got him they did it. They also built a brand new state of the art basketball arena something we refuse to do. Sickening that Auburn cares more about basketball than we do. Oats gets a mulligan from me for next season but the guy has his work cut out for him recruiting and coaching against guys like Pearl, Howland, Crean, Calipari, soon to be Buzz Williams, Barnes, etc.
It is a race we won’t win. Period.

It's helped fill a Mardi Gras sized hole in my heart.
Kidding aside, with nothing going on, and my favorite things still cancelled, the timing for us to become great again is perfect.

I'm shocked I didn't have an opinion on this hire. Maybe I was just trying to stay away after my opinions about how good I thought Avery would be were proven so very wrong.

The Nate Oats hire gets a grade of F-, IMO.
As in frick, That boy good.

Seeing that gif makes me sad. I tried watching Coming 2 America. And it was horrible. I stopped watching after 45 minutes.
