We had a enough key pieces back to expect and have a better product than this. Also Bruner was a non factor most of last season with injury.

It's also not like this is a team with 3-4 picks in the next draft. This is a team with guys who's currently play is hurting their stock. JD is only guy who I see as an upcoming draft pick, and that's based completely on potential. And his turnover issues and indecisiveness have caused him to fall in mock drafts from earlier in the season.

From the outside looking in it certainly felt that way. But we lost 2 of our 3 plus defenders and clearly have nobody to replace them once Burnett went down. And on top of that our All-SEC PG has turned into one of the worst players in the conference while our 5-star impact freshman is clearly not entirely ready to have what most would consider a 5-star freshman impact.

Throw in Keon not figuring out how to become more aggressive and what has been just flat out unlucky bad shooting across the board, and the wins and losses start to make a lot more sense.

After last year our expectations just got too high, this team was just not able to meet them. They can turn it around but there maybe more bad losses ahead.
At this point let’s just hope for a tournament berth and a round one win.
I won’t expect anything more.

Davison is not a great shooter and is a true freshman. Did you expect him to come in and be Kobe?

No but expected alot more considering the hype. Meanwhile AU is riding a true freshmen stud to a #1 seed and lock for the elite 8. Had great run riding the surprise of Okeke a few years ago. Pearle is whipping Oats arse in recruiting evaluations. JD ain't carrying shite.

I dunno about that - Jabari Smith and JD Davison are not in the same class and nobody thought they were.

Jabari Smith has been an automatic, no doubt Top 3 pick in the 2022 draft since he was like 15. JD was a borderline Top 10, 5-star player who had a lot of raw skill and played small school ball. A lot of people weren't sure about his immediate translation to college ball as a shooter or defender (though his summer circuit made a lot of those folks into believers).

Besides, everybody wanted Jabari. Everbody wanted JD. It's not like Auburn didn't want Davison, they recruited him to the very end.

Has the basketball program abandoned the “blue collar” construction hat stuff yet? Wish they would.

It’s cringe. Plus it only works for like half a year before elite players are embarrassed to join.

Case of great recruiter but bad coach? Don’t get me wrong, he has put excitement back into the program, but how much rope will he be given based on the poor performance so far this year?

I mean, we won the SEC regular season championshiop for the first time in god knows how long - the first time i've ever seen us win the SEC tournament.

Having some growing pains in the year after, but even Saban had 3 losses after he won the first natty here. Let downs after losing leadership is pretty standard and we have an absurdly hard schedule this year.

I am still extremely happy with Oats even if I am frustrated with this year at time.

Already talking about how much rope he gets is fricking bullshite IMO. He would have to have 2 complete meltdown years for me to want him gone.

First SEC regular season title since 2002 (19 years)
First SEC tournament title since 1991 (30 years)
First SEC double since 1987 (34 years)
First 2-seed since 2002 (19 years, 3rd time ever)

We also have 11 McDonalds All-Americans in program history, and Oats has signed 5 of those.

As I sit here and glance over to my only Daniel Moore print that he did for basketball ,I see Pettway. As a player he was one of the scrapest, hardest working players that I remember. He’s coaching these guys and if he can’t get it through to them to play like him nobody can.

Sounds like a yaw yaw fan in 2020.

I've already had Malzahn-of-the-hardwood thoughts that I try to put out of my mind.

Everyone talking about effort/toughness etc...that's on the coach too. You have to motivate and show leadership to get it.

Saban hasn't been 100% in this area either (think 2018, 2010). Nobody's perfect. But it is 100% on the coach to recruit, coach, and motivate players.

Jd was a big fish in a very small pond at a small HS BB program. I realize these guys get a lot of hype playing AAU ball but he is now a very small fish in a very big pond facing bigger stronger players who are older and more mature. Just thinking out loud guys

Thing is, he really didn't get a proper AAU experience with COVID cancelling so much. He missed a shitload of prime development opportunity, that he didn't get in 2A Alabama basketball. So I'm not surprised he's been timid and turnover prone. He has a lot to learn, but the potential is obvious. But I don't think he'll stay at Bama long enough for us to see the switch flip, and him taking over.

His athleticism is off the charts, may take him a year or two but whenever the light turn on and he gains confidence and comfort, he will be a really strong asset for the team.

I love when the people who have never contributed shite to the basketball threads suddenly show up to criticize when things aren't going well.
