Kirby Smart Thinks SEC Is Putting Itself At a Disadvantage For Playoff
© Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart thinks because the SEC is stacked with great teams and games this year, some of those teams will be left out of the College Football Playoff...
quote:

“There’s no question, and what’s crazy is the only people you can trust and believe in this business is Vegas,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said on 92.9 The Game's "The Steakhouse."

"Because you tell Vegas to do all these teams, there’s no question who would be favored in these games. And I guess that doesn’t matter, because the perception will be every conference will have two or three teams left out that should get in and they’ll include SEC teams in that two or three.

But these SEC teams, whoever it ends up being, it could be anybody, because the schedules are just brutal when you look at what’s left, it’s crazy.”

“It makes me wonder about the whole nine-game conversation, because I’m sitting here going, ‘Wait a second, what if we all had nine games? We’d be talking about three- and four-loss teams,'” said the Georgia head coach.

“Because you just add another game, you’re going to play another good team and you’re going to bring about the possibility of teams losing. There’s so much parity in our league right now. It’s closer than it’s ever been.”

He is exactly right. But, with that being said, almost all know the SEC Championship is the National Championship of College Football.

He is right but as a fan I still want 9 sec games!

But the sec wanted the big money matchups every weekend…they can’t walk it back now

Right. Money became the be all, end all. It bought acquiescence to ending East/West divisions, 12 team playoff, and created a myth that an undefeated, one or two loss Penn State or Oregon are comparable to Georgia, Alabama, or Texas A&M.

What the BCS, the four team playoff couldn’t do, 12 teams, NIL, and the portal have done. Minimize the SEC’s dominance.

Who was favored in the Bama vandy game again? Guess Vegas doesn't always get it right. Play 9 games and quit being a pansy.

Who said they did get it right every time? You think pointing to an outlier proves they are not better at what they do than anybody else? You think if a QB throws one interception in a game, it makes them bad?

I mean, in a sense he's right, but the best teams in America are going to make the 12 team playoff and that's all that really matters.

the best teams could have 2-3 losses bc of the conference, but won't get in over a 1 loss chump..

Oregon would have 4 losses in the SEC this year.

Win your conference, go to the playoffs. What's the problem?
user avatar
BoogerSykes7 months
Because obviously only one team can win the conference. What happened to all the other good teams coming out of the SEC that could potentially get left out with playing nine games? The point is to get exposure for your conference and get as many teams from your conference and as possible so he's making sense.

The strongest teams might not play for the SECCG because of wildly unbalanced schedules.

If coaches would just take out some more QBs from opposing teams, that parity would go away.

He is absolutely right.

He's right. Require an out of conference P4 game. Don't make it 9 sec games.

If only some people had warned taking in Texas and Oklahoma would cause this problem

He’s right. There’s lots of teams feasting off bullshite schedules that would have lost several games by now in the SEC

Just win your games and there’s no problem. You want no consequence for a loss? Tough shite if you lose. In this NIL world, I enjoy the parity. This season has had so many good games and I’m here for that.
user avatar
cheeto2257 months
the parity is WITHIN conference and he's saying that a 2 loss SEC team is still BETTER than a 1 loss chump from another conference. He's not wrong.

If you’re not the best team in your conference you shouldn’t try and claim you should be the best team in the country.

Thats narrow minded and oblivious
user avatar
cheeto2257 months
then why not have a playoff with only conference winners? b/c you might get in a 1-2 loss chump, that's why.

And teams like Penn State would get in every year because of a weak school. Franklin is 12-25 against ranked teams and 3-17 against top 10. They don't belong. 9 SEC games a year is wrong.

Sounds like he's worried he may lose another game.

Why wouldn’t he be?

UGA has an incredibly tough schedule this year and aren’t as good as they’ve been in the past. Who knows what happens one way or the other but still have 3 rivalry games and ole miss in the road.

He has a very valid point. As an example, they could let in a 10-2 Iowa State team as a at large, when we know that a 9-3 LSU team would be favored to win.

I hopesthe committee takes the schedule difficulty in to account.

Teams with more than 3 or 4 losses win the Super Bowl nearly every year.

The SEC is a gauntlet and a 4 loss SEC team >>>>> 2 loss team in any other conference.
user avatar
VoxDawg7 months
If the parity that we've witnessed across the SEC spreads to other conferences, you might not have 12 teams with less than 2 losses.

a 3 or 4 loss SEC team would be favored vs a 2 loss Big 12 champ or ACC champ lol
