A number of college football coaches have been fired early this season. In an interview with ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, Nick Saban sounded off on that recent wave of coaches losing their jobs...
quote:

“You know, I’m not [surprised] because everybody’s raising money to pay players,” Saban said. “So, the people that are giving the money think they have a voice and they’re just like a bunch of fans. When they get frustrated and disappointed, they put pressure on the [athletic directors] to take action, and it’s the way of the world.”

“It’s really different,” he added. “Not in a good way from a developmental standpoint; a good way from a quality-of-life standpoint [for the players]. But we need to find a system that improves the quality of life of players but still focuses on the right stuff — development, getting an education, all those kinds of [things].”

He's right you know. It's no longer an amateur sport. Money controls.

It is pretty crazy that they were playing in the semi-finals 10 months ago, and now he's fired. You wouldn't think his leash would be that short.

He’s right but what he wants ain’t gonna happen. College football players at D1 schools aren’t there for education.

It's a sad state of affairs for college athletics and none of the rest of us want to admit it, but if we're all honest, we know you're right in your assessment.

...And why Nick got out of coaching. The story of the players demands for Milroe was true. He knew that day that 2023 would be his last season. The coach has basically ZERO control now. If you ask the boosters to spend all this money, amounts of money they never spent in the old days, they are damn sure gonna want a say in what goes on. With the transfer portal the players can leave anytime they don't like what's going on. A coach just coaches what he's got nowadays with very little say. Boosters will have less patience now that they are stroking 20-30 million dollars to buy players.

Yep, it’s impossible to manage a roster.

And this is why he will NEVER go back to CFB

It’s wild how we went from four to five figure deals with local bagmen, to million dollar contracts. Dodge chargers don’t seem to have the recruiting pull that they had five years ago. Generationally talented qb Cam Newton reportedly took 200k (which was an unprecedented high sum at the time). These days, the scrub qb at UNC (south Alabama transfer) makes 2 million a year.

Franklin was at Penn St. for 12 years. 1 playoff appearance, 2 rose bowls and won his conf 1 time. He wasn't meeting expectations and wasnt going to this year either. That's why they fired him. The exorbitant coaching salaries are just as much to blame as player saleries.

It doesn't take hardcore research to figure out a guy like Franklin isn't universally beloved... his firing was not surprising. CFB is dumb enough where it's not all about records sometimes - locals (with money) run the show in college athletic departments.

Bingo. This is why Saban retired. He made the right call. CFB is insane and frustrating to watch.
It's all about guys in the background writing the checks, stiring the pot, then firing the coaches. It's not sport any longer.

Div II and Sunbelt type schools get to develop players and build a team. Power four teams do not. 1, 2, and 3 star players rarely hit the portal and you don't have to pay them.

Saban is rarely wrong. The NCAA needs to be let go. A new governing body should be created wtih Saban being the commissioner over CFB

He’s the next LSU coach. Pay him $20mm a year. He would bring that in to the athletic department in one month.

Theres gotta be more behind the scenes to the Franklin fire. He pissed off the wrong person to get booted that soon after a playoff season.

Saban dont work for Penn state or know what franklin situation with the a.d. was. Maybe he was on a short leash? I felt the fire was justified after returning Sr qb and preseason top 5. And you drop games to ucla and northwestern???? At home at that
