lol. I don't think I've ever acted that way that I can recall. I've always preferred the quintessential timeless look that downtown used to have and have always been against making it look more modern, not sure why you'd think otherwise. Btw here's one for you:
The ______ (adjective) poster acted so ______ (adjective) when they kept _______ing (verb) their ________ (noun) instead of posting ______ (preferred pronoun) mad lib.

That was long before my time but must have been a magical time in Athens. I think the early to mid-80's was the zenith of the Athens scene (personal bias, of course). But I can remember people even back then talking about how there were developers who envisioned Athens becoming almost a suburb of Atlanta one day.
Athens must have seemed like an undiscovered jewel in '71. TK's only just opened up around that time. TK himself may have served you the pitchers.

I wasn't alive then but I imagine you might be right. My good friend's dad was there from 80-85 and can't imagine how awesome that was. He used to work at the wendys north of downtown and said meat cleaver weaver would come in and order 3 triples lol.
It was just such a simpler time back then (I'm assuming). Would have loved to experience it. I imagine a campus full of good ol boys homegrown from Georgia that always wanted to go to UGA and enjoyed every minute of it. Compared to now where it's a mix of mostly out of staters and in state Rajesh's who don't give the slightest shite about UGA. Sad.

I have an ancient can of Varsity chili in back of cubbard that I’ve never had the heart to toss out.
Will this be worth any bit-nickels in future clown world?

I already called checkmate. You don't have to keep getting checkmating yourself and the Guild. Unless you want to

Athens between 1980 and 1990 .... we loved it and hated it at the same time.

You should ask em about Labor Day weekend in 1982. Athens was out of control and most of the students came back to campus early just for the Clemson game and that weekend.
Party started Saturday morning and didn't end until the wee hours on Monday nt.
I heard stories about the Bama week in 1976 but can't imagine it topping that weekend.

Labor Day weekend 1983 was no slouch either. UCLA visited Athens for the opener.
Those were the days of open keg parties on the lawns of the frat houses, not to mention house parties everywhere, bands playing with uncontrolled access and open containers at Legion Field...
Things started to change when GA increased the drinking age to 20 in '85 and to 21 in '86. Not to mention the bans on open parties, tighter checks on IDs, and all the rest. Then in the early 90's, the HOPE scholarship began to change the academic culture as it became one of the few flagship universities providing a more or less free education if you could get in.
Can't argue UGA isn't a vastly better academic institution now if you go by average SATs, GPAs, and overall admissions difficulty. But back in the day, it was the "classic" state university and well, probably more fun.

Not close IMO
Clemson was coming off its NC season and defeating the Dawgs in '81 and was the zenith of Herschel mania. The build up to the game started in mid summer.Never seen anything like it.It was also the first night game in Athens since the 40's.

Didn't TK get offed by another restaurant owner in Athens?

Yeah, there was a feud between TK and the owner of a nearby place. I guess the rivalry got to a whole different level.
I think that all went down in the late 70's but TK's Saloon lived on without him through the 80's and early 90s.

Funny story but worked at Lowery’s for 3 years. Had to quit or risk not graduating or ever having a steady relationship or liver.
There was some history from TK that came over to Lowery’s.

Seems like the dude who owned the BBQ place on Broad and Milledge was assassinated as well.

Redneck mafia got him if I remember right. Think the bbq was Springhouse BBQ? I ate there alot and hated hearing of his murder.

Bumping this thread because The Varsity announced they are building 2 new locations- one in Bethlehem and one in Athens.

It's about damned time. Unless there was asbestos in the OG location, or the owners are severely allergic to money, it's an institution.
