I met him once on an Athens barstool and another time on an Atlanta bar stool in little five points when he was peddling books to the alternative book stores.

Which Varsity came first, Athens or Atlanta?

Atlanta. And it was founded by a GT grad.

I personally don't give a shite about the varsity.

While Atlantas was certainly first I always heard the football player logo was supposed to be Fran tarkenton. Haven't seen anything to confirm that though

Gumbys

I worked there for a few weeks when I was in school as a driver and it was no wonder that place got shut down with a quickness. Managers and employees openly smoking pot on shift, coke being offered left and right, it was a little much even for a kid who wasn't afraid to dabble recreationally. I think I made it a few weeks on the job before I called it quits.

That was also the first place me and some buddies were able to score some pints using our shitty fake IDs our first few weeks at Creswell. It rarely worked anywhere downtown, but at Gumby's they were usually more than happy to oblige.

Pokie sticks, baby. Nothing better when you were good and sauced.

My first trip back to Athens after leaving the Army in 1971 included a couple of pitchers at T K Harty's with friends.

I got a greasy burger there in 1980. They were so fast! Big gov hates local mom and pop shops.

Calling Gumby's at last call and getting back to your house just before the delivery guy was always the right move.

I thought the founder never graduated, just attended and dropped out or flunked out.

That poor guy gets the shaft so many times. Some jackass assistant DA who lives in his neighborhood had the county try to condemned his house because it was messy.
I remember him hanging out at my grandmother's bookstore in my younger years. She always referred to him as William.

I don’t remember how large the largest Gumby was, but I remember getting a few and seeing the drunken rise from the dead.

I swear 20 years from now I'm gonna be downtown and look around and recognize literally nothing from my college days.

I know times change and all but small southern college towns should look the part, it doesn't need to look like a soulless Atlantic station

This is too perfect. Becasue not even 10 years ago, if someone made this exact same post, you'd of snarked out and called them crusty. Then, another chowder pop might of strolled up, danced a jig, and regurgitated a simpsons old man yelling at cloud gif for the 750,000th time. While another guild member chimed in with some incoherent cringe babble like 'lol. you haz a sad! Y U B salty?!'

But now here we all are.

Checkmate, chowder-pops.
