The varsity should have never left downtown to begin with. Hate hearing Gyro Wrap closed up, it was a favorite.
Preferred the Athens of the early 90s, Bissets, Taco Stand, Gus Garcia's, Tres Compadres, Uptown, Washington Street Tavern, etc...

I still weep over many places long gone from the Athens scene: Herbie's All Nighter, Wilson's Soul Food, Rocky's, Gumby's, Harry Bissetts.
And while this is about restaurants not bars, I will say that T.K. Harty's was one of a kind.
Athens now reminds me of a glossy, corporate college town like Boulder. Even everything hippy seems a little too new and pricey...faux hippy?

I still miss The Screaming Coyote.

“Herbies”
Damn.
After a full night at Lowery’s Tavern that place was great until the frat boys ruined it.
Will miss the Varsity although I haven’t been in many years. Doubtful the college kids support it like they once did. Too many options.

Actually ended up working at Herbie's for a couple of months - he was a good dude.

This has been in the works years. They'd bought up all of the properties around the Varsity and had already torn them down. They donated five or six row houses along Reece Street to the County in exchange for a variance on the property.
Edit: I miss the old Gyro Wrap and their feta dip. Does anyone remember some old grizzled dude who hung out up front? He had a bad eye and looked like Popeye?

Interesting. When I lived off of Reese I remember alot of controversy over such matters, never thought they'd get it through.

From what I understand, one of the houses was the office of the first black doctor in Athens. Also, Downtown is considered a 'food desert'. Preserving the house and adding a grocery store near downtown were the deciding factors.

When Gumbys and the shrimp boat place closed down it was a sad sad day. Those were my dining hall free go to places. I know the food sucked, but when your 18-20 with no money, they did the trick.

Such BS.
Between Daily's Co-Op, and the Nellie B convenience store, and the bus route to East Side Walmart, as well as another bus to Alps Kroger, the poor people around the fringes of downtown have plenty of food options. And it's not like the "poor" people don't have cars. Also it's not like the Varsity is downtown.
Liberals using fake compassion as a cover for their graft.

It is a 5 minute drive from downtown to the Alps Kroger (with little traffic). It is an 8 minute drive (with little traffic) from my house in an "affluent" suburb to the closest grocery store. Do I live in a food desert?

China Boat but yeah. I never thought I would be nostalgic for diarrhea, but here we are.

Dr Shu was a "refugee" from China. He was a nuclear physicist.

I still hit the Mayflower, The Grill, and the Roadhouse when I go to Athens. Good for the soul.

In other old Athens news, it seems Ort never paid taxes so he can't get social security. Or so the new gofraudme states in the Fagpole.

I love Ort and bought him many beers over the years, but I’m not aware of him having a job other than writing for the Flagpole.
