Original location became a money play; they bought up land all around the Milledge/Broad intersection and packaged it together to sell to a real estate development for way more than they’d ever make or made selling hot dogs and burgers.

Glad they’re still going to maintain a presence close to town and probably better for them to be closer to the 316 corridor where they’re more likely to get nostalgia traffic. No point trying to compete with better options closer to campus

I imagine the new one in Watkinsville will just be one of those 'Junior' varsities like they have around metro ATL. It won't be the full monty.

And all the little redneck grandchildren will listen to their pappy and mee maw tell them "this ain't the real varsity, boy you shoulda seen the old one, it was like the Disney World Castle at the top of the hill, and there was magic energy in the air, and I swear the fries were better"

And then 'Jack and Diane' will come on the "jukebox" and pappy and mee maw will both tear up and clutch each others hands after the line "suckin' on a chili dog"

As they leave to get back to campus for the game, paw paw says "this parking lot is set up all wrong, you can't even get out of here, what's this guy doing? They must have had Tech grads design this shitshow"

"Marvin!" cries mee maw. "The kids!"

"Don't yell at me while I'm driving woman! Somebody liked to get keelt out here, this is crazy, I tell ya what"

You forgot the part when the two year old eats a single onion ring and promptly shits themself and then Toby Keith comes on with the song about blowing up Bin Laden and Marvin doesn’t know whether he’s mad or proud but resolves to give Miss Marvin the ol heave ho in out either way

Other than the University, Athens has lost so many venues and restaurants that so many people hold great memories of. I remember my grandparents used to take me to the Varsity all the time when I was in school. It was one of their favorite restaurants in Athens(maybe 2nd behind Charlie Williams). I imagine they will doze down those big magnolia trees out in the Varsity parking lot. What bugs me about all the changes in Athens is it seems to be more corporate chains. Downtown Marietta is now more eclectic than downtown Athens.

Seems like the dude who owned the BBQ place on Broad and Milledge was assassinated as well.

Someone shot him in the back with a rifle while he was leaving his Commerce location.

Shot in the back from a distance? Pretty sleezy as far as assassinations go. Could have at least gone at him Mafia style.

The worst part was the hypocrisy.
