Because they thought Jake Fromm was better than Justin Fields
Answer me this. What evidence is there that Justin Fields improved from game 1 to game 14 in 2018? A true freshman should have lots of improvement from game 1 to game 14. How much did Fields improve?

2019 should have been a full out open competition to win the job but fields cried and left so we never got to see it.
In any other era, this is what happens. Its classic UGA luck the transfer portal and not sitting out a full season became a thing in 2019.

Remember, we started Grayson Lambert over Jacob Eason for the first game as well.
Grayson Lambert arguably had a better 2015 season than Jacob Eason in 2016.
Kirby started the more prepared QB and when things were about equal then Kirby went with the more talented but less prepared QB. That's the smart move.
He also recruited Jake Fromm with Eason still on the roster. And recruited Fields with Fromm and Eason on the roster.

The world will never know because he never really got a chance.
What we do know is that Justin Fields is a way, way more dynamic football player than Jake Fromm could ever be. That was true in week 1 of 2019 at the latest.
Doesn’t matter though. Water under the bridge. Hopefully Kirby learned from that.

He did learn and he got the closest thing to Fields he could find for 2020. Too bad that guy was a bitch.

Mathis has the measurables to become a legitimate dual-threat QB like Bennett but with NFL height and arm strength. He should get game reps from here on out because we are going to need him if we are to face Alabama again in the SECCG
Mathis looked completely out of his element against Arkansas. No matter how many reps he gets from now until Atlanta, he is not going to be able to do anything against Bama.
If height and arm strength were the most important factors of playing QB than Ryan Mallett would’ve beaten out Tom Brady in New England. Until I see Daniels get playing time, Bennett gives us an exponentially better chance than anyone else on our roster in a rematch against Bama.

And honestly I would rather see us develop these young guys aka Mathis and Beck.
Daniels has 3 years of eligibility.

And any play this year doesn’t count. So 4 really.

Maybe, but do you trust this staff’s quarterback judgement? I don’t, and as a result I think it’s equally possible Daniels has been ready to go for three weeks and Kirby hasn’t been giving him a shot because Stetson is playing “well enough”
If we had a good track record with QB decisions, this would be a much quieter topic.
Precisely my point.

I suggest we create the Rant Talent Evaluation Advisors and Recruit Development Squad ... We can call it RTEARDS For short and get matching shirts. We can make sure Kirbs recruits the right players, but more importantly develops and PLAYS the right players. We will advise him with our deep base of chatroom and local newpaper knowledge along with game film evals. This is something we clearly need at UGA. Who here is a RTEARDS?????!!!!

Ah, I see we're supposed to be civil and defer to the coach all the time on a college football message board with the word rant in the title. Noted, captain.

Just out of curiosity...what would you prefer to see Kirby do with regard to the QB position, Cracker?
He seems to hint that Stetson will be the QB until one of the other guys develops past him.
Do you believe he intends to use a game manager in Stetson in order to hopefully avoid wasting the defense this year?
Do you believe there is a QB on the roster that is championship caliber?

In 2018 fromm was pretty fricking good
Fromm was terrible in the LSU game and was not good in a few games leading up to that. The coaching staff should have been looking for any excuse to make the QB switch as it was always blatantly obvious who had more talent. If Fields had come in at halftime of the 2018 LSU game, we would be undefeated and favorites to win the national title this year.
You can't win with caretakers at QB anymore. You have to have a playmaker.

He finished 3rd nationally in QBR
and ended up throwing 30 TD's and
6 INTS.
I believe it was the highest rated QBR in UGA history. So it's
a pretty "fricking good" season no
matter how you measure it.

He got hot after the bye week. Going into the bye week, his numbers were fine but not great and the eyeball test showed a QB who was missing easy throws.
Like I said, the coaching staff should have been looking for any reason to bench Fromm for Fields, and the first half of the LSU game should have been the final straw.

The 2nd half of the LSU game was the final straw for Fields. It is still inconceivable to me that we didn't at least give him a series or two given how poorly Fromm and our entire O played that game.

I assumed the USC kid would be the QB this year. Big talent and already proved himself in D1. With that said, he transferred because he lost his spot. Not sure exactly why other than what we have read. I can only assume Smart thinks Bennett gives us the best chance to win. Maybe the USC kid isn’t ready. Maybe the USC kid is playable, but lacking mobility. Bennett made some mistakes and got rattled. He also was let down by his Wrs at some key times. I’m sure the coaches look at that in the film room. Bottom line is, I don’t know what is going on that has us where we are at with the QBs. I could make some assumptions, but they would be assumptions. Some of y”all are like the dudes on Ancient Aliens on here, You make assumptions and then assume the assumptions are fact and then rage on them. It’s odd is all.
