Brooks spends an hour breaking down JTs college tape and it’s not pretty. Not saying this guy is the end all be all of QB assessment...but it’s pretty clear he doesn’t think much of his mechanics and should be an eye opener to everyone scratching their head about why this kid isn’t starting.

It's possible that our worst fears are true, that Daniels is actually worse than Mathis and Bennett, a truly depressing thought. However, he was a 5 star and the #3 QB in the 2018 class behind Lawrence and Fields. This has to count for something.

Maybe he doesn't look great in practice, but we can't go this season without at least giving him a shot. There's nothing to lose.

True...but his point that JT had 3 D1 college receivers on his HS team is something I didn’t know and would’ve definitely helped his stats.

I haven’t watched Brooks video, but I have been saying since we brought JT in that he looks like a slightly more athletic Jake Fromm with similar arm strength and way more proclivity to throw the ball into trouble.

Did Brooks say anything like that?

No, the kid has a great arm. He threw one ball from the 15 yard line to the other 25 yard line in the air.

His problem is with his mechanics. He tends not to step where he is throwing and it opens his hips and uses a lot of his upper body strength to compensate. When he tries to throw deep he does what Brooks described as a "pop" step with his front foot at the point of release. The problem is his timing isn't always perfect and he will pop either too early or too late leading to under/over throws.

Aaron Rogers has the same delivery but is obviously able to make it work. Brooks thinks he needs to rework his overall delivery and get rid of that aspect.

He can really zing it and is accurate inside of 25 yards where he can rely on on just his arm.

Over that he is terribly inaccurate and compounds that by making iffy decisions.

Based all on freshman year tape basically. His first game as a sophomore he had good stats but his mechanics did not seem to have changed at all.

So he’s basically a worse Bo Nix. No thanks.

I know Bo Nix is trash but by God I’d love to have him at least just this season. He’s definitely better than what’s on our roster

I’d definitely take that right now.

No kidding. I’d take Bo Nix over the shite we have now any day. And I’m not saying JT is gonna be a stud for us but dude is also, what, 20? Played at USC as a true freshman and then one extra game? I’d not think he’d be a stud right out of the gate and, if he was, he wouldn’t be transferring. Only Georgia has QBs who are elite leave the program.

So, basically, I tell yall the same shite and now this guy is an authority? If I started charging y’all would that make it better?

I will also add that a serious knee injury and preexisting poor throwing mechanics can bring in a whole new set of issues for a QB. Then add the fear of setting your front foot after getting your leg mashed in half.

So:
1. Still recovering from major knee surgery.
2. Throwing mechanics issues.
3. Which are likely contributing to inaccuracy.
4. Questionable pass or not pass decisions.

Sounds like he has a lot to overcome to become our starter next year.

After I watched Daniels' college "highlights" last week I wondered how he was so highly rated coming out of HS.

I much prefer a healthy Bennett over the Daniels I saw playing in USC highlights.

They also had several D1 offensive linemen. I've read before that part of his problem in his freshman year at USC was having to adjust to not having a colossal talent advantage around him. He was used to having as much time to throw as he wanted at Mater Dei and then was running for his life behind a terrible line at USC.

Stetson Bennett IV will be our starter next year. Vandagriff will "lack experience" and Stet will "give us the best chance to win" per Kirby sometime next August.

Keep in mind that he was rated as the highest QB prospect *as a junior*, then reclassified to graduate a year earlier. While recruiting rankings are certainly imperfect, they generally get more accurate by the time a kid is in their Sr season of HS. Because he didn't have that final year, my gut take is that he was probably ranked a little more on potential. That's not to say he isn't or can't be a good QB, but that his rating may have been inflated at least to a small degree.

JT's 5th star could have definitely been the result of the Mater Dei reputation. He was very good on tape but when you add in where he played, a school that produced NFL QB after NFL QB, then you're gonna have a lot of eyes on you.

I'm not sure his exact age but his Freshman year at USC he was supposed to be a Senior in HS. That would lead me to believe he was 17. That could mean he's 19.

Not arguing just something I learned in Brook's video.

His lone season tells me he's not. The guy has terrible feet placement that needs hella work. The knee injury compounds that.

I don't care at this point. They coach that out of him eventually or BVG is the starter come August.

I'm pretty sure he was a year behind so that when he graduated early he was actually in the graduating class he should have been in by birth.
