Our D was absolutely gashed tonight. 41 points. 564 yards allowed. 417y through the air. 147y on the ground. Only 2 sacks and 1 turnover.

I know there are a lot of ins and outs that contributed to how bad these stats look but, wow.

I don't think we were nearly aggressive enough. Jones was rattled early in the game and we let him off the hook by sitting back and only rushing 4.

Obviously, the offense was a YUGE problem tonight and will garner the most attention from fans, especially the QB situation. But we can't ignore how poorly our vaunted defense did in a big game.

Poor QB play in the second half, turnovers, and absolute bullshite penalties didn’t help.

Bama did most of their damage on explosive plays. I didnt expect us to give up 41 but also didn't think Stetson would throw 3 picks.

Yeah...we couldn’t stop their deep game. Granted in the second half our guys were getting tired but still...I don’t think the TOO was that out of whack.

Stets picks though and giving them the ball with a short field we’re killers. Also, we were getting good yards per carry on the ground. I’d rather put it on the back of the oline and just run it at them.

Championship teams do not give up 41 points and 570 yards. I do not give a shite who is on the other side.

We’re a long way from a championship team, man.

CFB is ALL about QBs and receivers today. Defense is meaningless until the game changes and that ain’t happening anytime soon. The big 12 is poised to replace the SEC as the dominant conference because it makes for better TV. If a walk on QB can keep UGA in a game for a half it’s obvious that Defense is no longer relevant. Teams that will make the change will succeed. Those that insist on recruiting anything other than QBs and receivers will look good at times but won’t win anything meaningful anytime soon until the game changes, if it ever does. Ole Miss and Alabama last week is what CFB is today. Hell even Stetson Bennett can lead a team to a decent half of football today....defense no longer matters at all.

I expected us to give up 27-30. But I expected about half of that on our offense. I was expecting mind-killing turnovers.

But I have to give Bamas OL credit. I knew Leatherwood was going to be solid, but I didnt expect the other 4 to stand tall.

Two things lead to that IMO:

1) That Alabama offense is the best in college football and almost specifically designed to beat our defense. Multiple receivers that can go to the house on any snap is not something we’re built to handle.

2) The offense has to do SOMETHING in the 2nd half. It’s not even about the point totals. It’s about cashing in on good drives and not committing turnovers. We failed miserably at both of those and didn’t really give the defense much of a chance to flip the momentum.

That said, I think the defense will clean some things up between now and the rematch and if we can find a more consistent offense and quarterback, I very much look forward to it.

3 turnovers against Alabama, plus a lot of batted down passes and misses. That all played a big role, too. We would have needed much more offensively to stay in this, since no defense is going to completely shut down the level of talent that a team like Alabama has.

Deep balls are a problem.

But you can’t depend on the D when you’re going 3 and out so often and 3 interceptions. No team can.

Somethings gotta give on offense, and it’s smelly around the qb position unfortunately

If you can’t make enough plays on offense, depending on the flow of the game, you aren’t going to win.

That was the case tonight. The stats don’t really reflect that the defense got quite a few stops against on the best offenses in CFB. It doesn’t really matter because the turnovers led to 21 UA points in a 17 point loss, a game which we led by 4 at halftime.

Totally agree. Saban saw the writing on the wall a few years back and went all in with offense. Orgeron did the same. Alabama has had maybe 6+ receivers the last 2-3 years that are as good as anybody we’ve EVER had at uga. Receivers just aren’t our DNA, running backs are. I think we’ve only had one 1000 yard receiver ever.

Most of the last few championship games have been shootouts. I think we may have to change our whole approach to the game and Kirby is probably smart enough to see that too.

Do we even have the wideouts in thhe pipeline to come close to challenging Bama? Pickens has been a non factor. Blaylock is hurt and seems more of a possession guy. Burton maybe but he needs to get more consistent. The bottom line is no defense can stop three wideouts like Bamas and we ain’t even close to having those kinda guys.

No one likes to admit it but we frankly aren't very good at defending deep passes against any offense that is remotely competent at those type of throws. We were roasted tonight, against LSU last year, and even against Mizzou a couple seasons ago. Hell, even Gitmo completed a few against us last week. It's been the one weird Achilles' heal of a Kirby Smart defense.

Auburn and Tennessee missed a few wiiiide open guys against us, I knew jones would hit that. Someone running full speed at you and you’re stopped and have to turn with them, they’re gonna get space. And if they don’t there’s a 45% chance you’ll breathe on them and it will be a PI. It’s rigged against the defense, we just don’t have the tools.

He got popped a few times. He was never rattled. If anything it fired him up. Wasn’t much of a pass rush from either side, but tough to say a guy was rattled when he was standing in there willing to take shots on the chin to deliver the ball

I dont think it is deep passes that give us fits.

It is going nickel and dime and defending elite receivers with your 5th and 6th best DB. It is personnel matchups.

We need to recruit OL and DBs like they are the lifeblood of the program. Because what other positions take up half of your team on the field?
