I would have liked to have seen DJ Daniel's at nickel. Did he even play?
This would be a game for Ringo to have a role in dime.
I love Stevenson and Webb. But sometimes, the WRs are going to beat those safety type bodies (see the TD on Cine on the boundary blitz)

I dont think it is deep passes that give us fits.
It is going nickel and dime and defending elite receivers with your 5th and 6th best DB. It is personnel matchups.
We need to recruit OL and DBs like they are the lifeblood of the program. Because what other positions take up half of your team on the field?
This comment doesn't make any sense to me at all. There are countless examples where deep balls have given Kirby's defenses fits. Another poster even mentioned other examples where teams had guys wide open on routes but failed to capitalize.
We DO recruit DBs and OL like they are the lifeblood of the program. I am not sure Kirby can do any better on that front. The talent acquisition part is not the issue.
And every team going nickel and dime will have problems with elite WR matchups. That's true from the pros to college on down. That's the nature of the beast. No team in America has enough elite DBs to match up pound-for-pound against another's great WRs. It doesn't really explain how our guys seem to continually get beat on deep balls, though (even against meh competition, like with Gitmo).

The first half showed UGA can win against bama. Just a little more chemistry with the wide receivers and qb and I think the bulldogs would’ve made a game of it ‘til the end. I think this can be fixed before the SECCG.

Our DB’s were exposed last night. All of them. Everyone saying Bama won because they have 3 NFL receivers. Hell, we supposedly have 2 NFL corners and a NFL safety back there. Kirby didn’t trust them enough to send pressure and they still got raped. Jones was absolutely rattled late 1st/early 2nd half. He had major happy feet. Then we quit coming after him.

It’s not how we normally play, but we’re going to have to have safety help over top constantly, including some cover 3 looks. We did it in the ‘18 championship game and it worked against basically these same receivers.
I wonder if Kirby didn’t use that look because he’s expecting to play them again?

Same as it ever was. Good luck supporting the BLM cause.

Thing is with Bama’s offense this isn’t a surprise. Their two losses last year they still scored 41 and 45 points. Unless you jump on em like Clemson did two years ago when they won by 4 touchdowns, you’ve gotta keep up in a shootout.

Once again we see that 5* kids want to go to a National Championship team. Alabama and Clemmons can stock their shelves with 5* players who dominate. We are close but still lacking in talent across the board.

The same Bama defense was gashed last week for more.
Our defense plays a lot of man. Puts guys on islands. We get away with this because we have good players in coverage and we have a disruptive pass rush. The QB doesn’t have enough time and more importantly time on deep routes...especially wheels and out and ups take time to develop. A disruptive pass rush takes this part of their game away.
Also, man requires defenders to get handy.
Much of Bama’s yards came on big plays. Long developing plays. They have good receivers and their QB made good throws. Can’t take that away from them.
Yet, long developing plays typically don’t have success against our defense. Because we get after the QB and we disrupt the receivers routes with defensive positioning.
Yet, against Bama, our rushers were getting tackled and held all game long. No flags.
On defense, Bama misses on third down? PI...defensive holding. It’s laughable really.
I wish I was surprised. Bama is a good team. .

So you’re saying Alabama is not a championship team?

We've got talent all across the roster.
The only issues can be, "are we too young" at a position? Or "are we too thin" at a position?
Kearis Jackson is our oldest active receiver as a redshirt soph. And he has missed games with injuries.
Pickens probably has played in the most games and that includes missing 2 halves for a Personal Foul. True soph.
Burton is a true freshman.
Rosemy-Jack Saint (sp?) Is a true freshman.
Robertson is our senior and he seems to be MIA. He took personal time off and I head he came back out of shape. But maybe there are other reasons he doesnt contribute (playbook/blocking).
We are thin at QB. Most teams are. But JT Daniels was expected to be ready. Mathis was expected to be ready. Beck wasnt expected to be ready, but I think we expected to get about as much as we do from Bennett (good enough). Bennett is obviously better at decision-making with his starting experience.
The only other "thin" spot in my concern is no other NT plays like Davis and can we sustain injuries in the secondary?

NFL receivers usually do pretty well against NFL DBs on Sundays, so...

We punted 4 times the entire game. Same as Bama. The only other time I saw where we should have punted again was when Bennett threw directly to the Bama defense instead of throwing it out of bounds. At that point we were still in the game.

We’re a long way from a championship team, man.
Just need an elite QB and better WR's. Its that simple. We have everything else.

Lololol. The conference whose team that hasn’t won a title in 15 years and whose lone Playoff team is giving up 55 pts/game in the Semi Finals to SEC teams. Holy meltdown Batman

Dawg DB's have gotten beat deep in every game but one this season. That is how you beat the Dawg D. Deep passing game.
Posted on 10/19/20 at 8:19 am to gulfportdawg
I dont think it is as simple as that.
You beat the Dawgs by getting more DBs on the field. Replace our 8 awesome linebackers with safety types who are trying to cover speedy WRs downfield (Stevenson, Webb).
The law of averages advise that teams who take deep shots will eventually hit. But those teams will also miss, and get stuck in 3rd and longs (we are a dangerous team to be stuck in 3rd and long too often. Law of averages)
