Also had full contact drills during the rain delay interruption during the Wake Forrest game. It’s a wonder someone didn’t get hurt and cost them their NFL career as we had several NFL players on that team.

With that said O is a story of perseverance, believing in work ethic as a means to eventual success, humility, and to never stop learning. A true “American Dream” story. Nothing but respect and happiness for him.

Supposedly they took advice from Gus and that was hire Morris.

What I understand is that Gus vouched for him and Jerry Jones really pushed for Morris to get hired. Basically the GOBN had no fallback plan and had side lined our acting AD who was just trying to hold down the fort until her new boss was hired.

With the early signing date fast approaching they panicked. Not only did we hire our worst coach ever we managed to piss off quite a few coaches who wanted the job and were ignored.

Joker Phillips was the worst, he took a team that had talent and had been to 4 straight bowls and turned them into a major dumpster fire.

He was supposed to be a great recruiter but sucked and as a HC he was even worse. He was a decent Offensive Coordinator and that is all he was good at. He set the program back 5 yrs.

I wanted Mike Gundy and I believed if we went after him hard, he might have left Oklahoma State. But I doubt it would have happened.

Mike Norvell wanted the job but we went full retard and ignored most of the candidates. It was either Gus or bust. A complete waste of time and we ended up with Chad.

Morris was a disaster but Arkansas was already in bad shape when they hired him, so it's not like Morris took a good thing and ruined it. He just took a bad thing and made it worse.

That's a solid reason to list him, in my opinion.

Look at Arkansas' trajectory- a couple decades ago they were in the SEC West rotation with LSU and Auburn, winning the division every once in a while. They hadn't won the SEC, but they were getting chances.
As late as 2011, they were a legit top 5 team. Couldn't match LSU and Alabama, but would probably beat anyone else in CFB that year.

Things went bad, and they needed the right guy to fix it and stay in contention. Instead, they've cratered.

Look at Michigan in the Big 10. Underwhelming with Harbaugh, but still 8-9 wins and a bowl every year. Let's say he gets fired in a scandal, and the guy that replaces him goes 3-9 every year afterwards, and gets beat by MAC teams regularly.
That's Arkansas right now.

I feel like the Joker hire, in hindsight, looks a lot worse then it was (the hiring, not the tenure).

He was a UK guy, a good Offensive Coordinator under Brooks, and they were hoping for continuity when Brooks left. It sucked to see him fail because I think most Kentucky fans were really excited to see him earn the opportunity.

Would've been much better off had Brooks sent Phillips off to a HC job at a smaller school before they dropped that on him.
I get your point, but the reality is it never should have happened.

In fact, we shouldnt have even been handing the job off. If Coach Brooks had gotten the upgrades he had wanted at the time, he wouldnt have retired. He had us about where Stoops got us to a year or two ago more or less.

If we werent so eaten up with basketball, a smart program would have either acquiesced and upgraded facilities and recruiting budget while the iron was hot, OR, let Brooks retire while bringing in a proven commodity in tandem with promised upgrades.

They tried to get by on the cheap and bank on the goodwill of the fanbase because Joker was a Cat. And we were willing to give hima bit more leash because of that as well as being OC for a successful Brooks tenure.

Reality is he didnt when set foot in the biggest HS football factories in the state. Trinity and St X. Straight up ceded them to UofL. What a complete and utter Joke. And yes, thats hindsight.

But the point is when your history is what ours is, you've got a steady foundation finally, the time was right to bring someone in worth a damn, not hand it off. No one who fits that description would for the same reasons CRB left. And thats on the administration. It always has been. Is it any secret weve spent more money on football during Stoops tenure (adjusted for inflation) than we ever have in school history, and lo and behold, astonishingly we're seeing the greateat run since Bear Bryant?

Im just glad the days of us running football like a secondhand clownshow are over.

Although it's NOT recent history, Bama's worse coaching hire, when compared to who we could have hired, I think was Ray Perkins when we could have had Bobby Bowden!!! Makes me sick thinking about it..

Mike Shula wasn't a terrible hire... He was just in way over his head plus he was just hired to get us through sanctions... Don't think anyone felt that he was a long term solution..

Dude busted his arse though at Ole Miss. Everyone that was around the program at the time said he is incredibly smart about the game and nobody comes close to his work ethic. It consumes him. His problem at Ole Miss was he tried to do literally everything himself and he had the team doing full contact practices the night before games.

I can respect Coach O, he sure seems like a player's coach and an all-around good guy to have your back in a foxhole.

Yeah, he might not have been stellar at Ole Miss, but even great coaches have to start somewhere and put some learning under their belts. I don't begrudge him his time there. He's learned a lot and is a far better coach for it.

Joker ruined the stability that Rich Brooks brought. There were no more than ten guys on his last team who would be on scholarship right now for Stoops.
