Remember when a half dozen blue bloods were anointed by the press preseason? And those half dozen passed around the banner while everyone else played the role of victim or spoiler? Remember how those blue bloods stacked their benches with stars because that's how the system worked?

Pepperidge Farms remembers.

Can you provide any examples where the #5 ranked team in the BCS or 4-team playoff era had a great argument to be ranked #2?

I think trying to pick a champion at the end of the regular season is ridiculous. I also think picking 4 teams out of 130+ is ridiculous.

My premise is this. Playoff games matter to players. Insignificant bowl games do not matter to players.

I don't like to watch sports when the players don't care. Period. That's it.

If you think the players and fans won't get excited for the regular season then we disagree. Also now teams can schedule other good teams and still get in the playoffs, giving us more good football to watch.

Also I believe it was TCU that was ranked 5th or 6th in 2014 who was probably good enough to be #2.

This is where college football is headed. Bama, Tenn, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU football fans…your team’s history just became a historical footnote.

This already happens - “claimed” national championships decades later - teams “anointed” to play for the championship - Let it happen on the field.

Maybe you blow Boise State out - maybe you lose - but your players sure as hell better show up and earn their NIL money.

At least rivals will have more fun dunking on the Gators when we continue to miss the playoffs in a 24 or even 48 team bracket

I'm sure your dumbass school wants to compete for a championship at your annual 8-4. Don't talk to us until you actually win one this century.

This is true. Maybe I need to rethink my position.

They weren’t insignificant and did matter to players before playoffs existed.

The 12-team “era” would indicate that the opposite is true. Maybe this is true for Georgia and Ohio State, but it is almost certainly not true for most of the top 25.

I’ll grant TCU 2014 as a particularly strong 5/6, but that outlier isn’t convincing enough to me to say that the system really needed overhauling.

Agree this is because of the kids sitting out bowls too. If you make it mean more the kids might play the games.

It does pull in more fans which will pull in more revenue. However, it 100% degrades the regular season there is no way around that. Disney is banking (and mostly correct) that FB fans are not going anywhere and they already have the audience. We can complain as much as we want but we are hooked. Just like Cowboys fans who team has sucked mostly for decades, only way to change is to stop watching the games yet the Cowboys are one of the most watched NFL teams out there.

What about high school football? It is also more like high school football now. As a matter of fact, it is more like all sports now.

You know why? Because college football has had the dumbest fricking way of picking a champion for over a fricking century, and it is about time someone changed it.

Doesn’t make the regular basketball season meaningless

Lmao - you ever looked at the CBB ratings for the regular season? G6 “meaningless” bowl games pull better ratings than basketball games between Kentucky and UNC

Are you under the impression that all UGA fans are under the age of 25 and have only seen their team be in playoff contention every year?

Because the playoffs were watered down with 4 teams. Now we’re at 24 with inevitable blowouts

And significantly greater risk of injuries to key players in games they shouldn't be having to play.

Well put.

MBAs are ruining a lot of things. They’re as bad as lawyers and politicians.

Kills the last thing college football had over all other sports… regular season relevance.

We are almost there already.

Last week's Alabama-Georgia game was a helluva game.

How much did it really matter? Ultimately, not very much. They could easily play each other two more times.

It’s BS. It should be a 4 team playoff max. A reward for a. great season.

Now, with opt-outs, bowl season is a joke. The playoff expansion once again makes these bowls meaningful games.

Are they really? 12-24 won’t have a chance at winning the whole thing so why assume there won’t be opt-outs unless there are penalties included in the player’s contracts?
