Because with less and less to lose with each regular season loss, you're going to have a natural dip in interest in regular season games. Also, and this WILL HAPPEN, you're going to get teams that during a certain point of the season, realize they've already made the playoffs and a win or a loss isn't going to materially impact their seeding, so it is more important to rest starters and get them healthy for the playoff run. Trust me, THIS WILL HAPPEN.

Also, can you imagine how pissed the city of Atlanta is going to be if/when the SECCG is discontinued? Talk about a massive blow to their economy.

Because a lot of people “go with the flow”

They see other people hate it, so it must mean they should hate it too.

Meanwhile they will be bitching an moaning at the boring bowl games vs 2nd teamers and walkons in a couple months.

The only realistic path for Texas A&M, Auburn, Florida, and LSU to reach the playoffs is through expansion, so I’m sure their fan bases are absolutely thrilled about the prospect.

Its not like high school football. if it was like HS, then the group of 6 schools should have their own champion. i mean do you think schools in the MAC, CUSA and sunbelt play the same sport as the SEC and B10?

The thing that made college football awesome was that it wasnt like any other sport.

Its just a money grab, like all things in this world.

Bowls FORMERLY were fun to watch - competitive post season matchups of teams that normally don’t play each other.

Now, with opt-outs, bowl season is a joke.

The playoff expansion once again makes these bowls meaningful games.

How can you not want that as a college football fan?

You watch the Bama-Georgia game last week? That game is completely meaningless now.

Because it makes the regular season irrelevant and takes away from those big games. Not even getting into how preposterous it is to have James Madisons peppered in there going up against big time competition.

Been arguing this on Twitter the past two days. People are really being naive if they think it won't happen. Just like with bowl opt-outs one coach will rest his QB in Week 12 and then it will become the standard.

Someone suggested they should move rivalry week up to Week 1 Awesome. We should ruin Rivalry Week and play in 100 degree heat just so Iowa St & North Texas can have a participation trophy.

Do you really think Bama and UGA aren’t going to want to enter the playoffs as a 1-4 seed and have a much easier path to the semi finals?

Do you really think a team like Alabama is going to go into Iron Bowl week 10-1 and ranked 5th and sit their starters since they’re firmly in the playoffs?

For me, it doesn't bother me that bad. This issues is what made college football great was the tradition. With everything changing constantly, we can't get any "tradition". Figure out the playoffs and leave it alone, figure out transfers and NIL (with more restrictions) and leave it alone. I know the latter at this point is easier said than done. But imo that is what the sport needs, some stability.

Do you really not understand the argument here? Nobody is saying the players and coaches don't still care about the game.

Yes, absolutely I could see a 11-0 Bama starting Austin Mack in the Iron Bowl. Just wait till some 11-0 or 10-1 team gets their QB hurt in a meaningless game. Are fans going to want to sacrifice their QB & playoff chances for bragging rights?

Also, you're way overstating the importance of seeding. In our current system, the 5th seed is by far the best seed to have. The only real motivation is to get that home field advantage in the 2nd round. The difference between a #1 seed and a #8 seed in the new format is playing the the #16 vs #9. Not really all that important.

Everything that once made cfb meaningful is being changed. They are making it easier to walk away from being a hardcore fan by making games no longer matter.

This season, the following top 24 teams were beaten by unranked or 25th ranked teams.
I think the 25 team playoff is great.

No. 6 Oregon / Oklahoma State, unranked
No. 11 Oklahoma / Michigan, unranked
No. 18 Syracuse / California, unranked
No. 9 Texas A&M / Kentucky, unranked
No. 16 Louisville / Wake Forest, unranked
No. 13 Penn State / Wisconsin, unranked
No. 8 Florida / No. 25 Missouri
No. 1 Texas / Oklahoma, unranked
No. 16 Florida / South Carolina, unranked
No. 10 LSU / Kentucky, unranked

I’m with you. Looking at last year it will still prevent 8-4 teams from making the playoffs and at least now potentially reward the 9-3 SEC teams who have the toughest SOS.

Are people really upset about missing a bunch of opt out bowl games?

How much did it really matter? Ultimately, not very much. They could easily play each other two more times.

And yet everyone seemed to enjoy it greatly and the fans are still going back on forth on social media like it was life or death, so I guess maybe it does matter, no?

I think this is a moot point. Just about every SEC team has a mid season cupcake game and all those teams will play their starters at some point.

Doesn’t make the regular basketball season meaningless
As a fan of a team that recently went 8-10 in the SEC and still had a Sweet 16 birth, it's pretty fricking meaningless.
