UT could have had Johnny. He grew up wanting to be a donghorn. They wanted him to play safety I think. He wanted to play QB.

While true Johnny wanted to go to Texas, he's not the one we'd take. Patrick Mahomes was recruited as a defensive back.

If I remember we didn't recruit DeAngelo Williams very hard, effectively let him go to Memphis.

Cutcliffe and his staff told DeAngelo he wasn't good enough to play RB in the SEC as well.

I'll say Genard Avery from Grenada, MS. Kid was dying for an Ole Miss offer but Freeze and company said he wasn't big enough to play LB in the SEC. He still holds the Memphis single season TFL record at 22.0 and had ~18 tackles against us when they kicked our arse in the Liberty Bowl. He is still playing DE in the NFL at the age of 30.

ETA Just saw that the Colts cut him. Still a really solid player.

Cam Newton

We didn’t pass on him all together but recruited him as a TE instead of QB.

I know Alabama recruited him but pissed him off during visit was Bo Jackson. Don’t know if he counts as a pass but there sure was a lot of dumbassery going on in that home.

The story Bo tells is that Bama told him there was absolutely zero chance he would play as a freshman and Pat Dye told him he could probably start.

Bo went with the playing time.

If we would have gotten DeAngelo, he would have been Eli’s no. 1 RB. Dang.

Johnny Manzeil, really wanted to be a Longhorn and grew up a fan but we wanted him to be a DB because of his smaller stature.

That was during our years of many missed QB opportunities of Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin, etc.

We really shite the bed there.

to what? maybe i’m being a little disrespectful but I dont remember Rivers being D1 athletic

Auburn wanted to move him to TE. Alabama wanted to move him to defense and see where he fit. He was a big guy. 6’5, 220# I think Alabama hoped he would fit at linebacker or with another 30#-40# at DE. Rivers obviously made the right choice to stick with being QB. He is back in Alabama now, head coach at a private school in Fairhope, AL. Dude must love football because as soon as he retired he became a high school coach. He coaches his son, who is the fourth rated QB prospect in the 2027 class. Alabama has not offered him a scholarship.

This comment is aging so well as not a single person listed by an LSU fan went to Alabama.

Maybe Terry Bradshaw?

Wasn't Bradshaw's issues academic or test score related? I don't think it was so much LSU didn't want him as it was he couldn't qualify for LSU.

He said the reason he didn't want to go to LSU was because he wanted to throw the football. When Terry was a Senior in High School (1965) LSU threw the ball 148 times and ran the ball 495 times. That is throwing the ball 23% of the time. If you look at Bradshaw's first season starting at La Tech (1968), he threw for 2,987 yards...LSU threw for 1,545 yards that season.

Sounds reasonable. Pretty much the reason Spurrier went to Florida. Ray Graves said he would air it out.
