Kirby has been a good coach. But he has underperformed with the talent he has had.
He does not yet have that signature win.
It is both a fair statement and not a fair statement.
He has wins in the SEC Championship game, against ND (2) and a win in the playoffs against Oklahoma and Lincoln Riley. All of those would be considered signature wins by pretty much everybody.
He has also lost some very big games, too, but that is normal, too. I can't think of a single coach that has not lost any big games.
quote:
As of right now his best win arguably would be the sec champ against a overrated auburn.
I would argue that the big win was in the Rose Bowl in the playoffs, but that's okay. But calling Auburn overrated? They beat two #1 teams during the regular season and would have made the playoffs if Georgia had not beaten them, so I think it is exaggerating to say they were overrated.
quote:
But he’s hasn’t quite got over the hump.
We agree 100% here. I typically don't enter into ranking coaches because it is all opinion, and all have legitimate points. I think Lincoln Riley is an excellent coach and would have a title if he had gotten a solid Defensive Coordinator. Instead he kept a pretty bad one and it cost him. He is, however a great offensive mind, and certainly deserves consideration on the list. I would make an argument that Kirby might be as good as Les Miles and maybe Jimbo Fisher who both have titles, though. I would put him above Gus Malzahn, as well. But yes, I think you are correct and it is more than fair to say Kirby has not gotten over the hump. he still has stuff to learn and needs to improve in areas if he is going to get over the hump. He does seem capable of making changes, though as evidenced by the changes in OC and offensive philosophy he is attempting. Now if he can make those changes instead of give them lip service....that will be the key.

He's only been HC for one year. I wouldn't call him a great coach. I would call him a coach who has tons of Urban's leftovers

I’m curious what Georgia fans think their best win is with Kirby.
I would agree with Oklahoma. The Auburn win is tainted a TOUCH by their top RB being injured. Do I think it (The injury) made the difference between a win and a loss? No. But I do believe it hampered Auburn a bit. I also think Oklahoma was a better team than Auburn that year, although I do believe Auburn had a much better team than some give them credit.
FYI, Oklahoma opened as a 3 pt, favorite.....not sure where the line ended up, though. I was looking at some of the articles about the game trying to find the spread and I saw one place where the over/under was set at 60.

pages and no PJ Fleck?
He was mentioned earlier.
I'll give the guy full credit for his success against the big boys but does anyone remember him scrapping by South Dakota St (4th qtr win) Georgia Southern (
a win in last 13 seconds) or Fresno State(OT win)? A fine line between success
and failure in this business.

He was my pick when we hired Orgeron.
Glad that didn’t work out!
Orgeron doesn't get enough credit either, imo. I mean he won a title, but he made the major change on offense that many coaches did not or would not do. Les Miles didn't do it....but Orgeron made a personnel change as well as an offensive philosophy change. Give the man major credit for putting his ego on hold and allowing his coaches o do their jobs.

Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly by a long shot. Both have been knocking on the door multiple times. The others haven’t even gotten close.
Whaaaaaat? Trying to decide if you are trolling or if you are serious.

UGA was -2 against OU, so a slight favorite at best.

A list of the BEST coaches without a NC dumbass.and the only one with more expirence is Lincoln Riley.
Having lost only once to Mullen,Gus,Kelly
and Riley COMBINED isn't impressive? Interesting
Do you think O even gets consideration on this list pre 19? How bout after his 4th year as HC? Of COURSE not.
BTW,please name another 1st time HC whose gotten off to a better start in the SEC.
Drinkwitz?!

I would go Riley day and Mullen as my top 3 in no particular order.

Numbers 2, 3, 6, 8, 9 will never play in a title game let alone win it. Michigan bought a "pig in a poke" with Harbaugh
Really? Because Gundy should have been in the NC instead of Bama in 2011 if not for Sabans incessant crying to the media....
Okie St had the better resume.

He replaced all of Urbans defensive coaches and replaced them with fantastic coaches. Top that off with a staff that very well may have the best recruiting class, ever.

Richt inherited a better situation than Kirby and Kirby still has a better record and accomplished more in his 1st four years.
They still played football in the East when Richt was there. Kirby inherited a MUCH easier East division to play in. Kirby has been on a steady noticeable decline.
1a. Riley
1b. Cristobal
1c. Pruitt
The rest can pound sand.

As soon as Oklahoma State lost they were ranked behind Alabama. Nick Saban being on Gameday or on the CBS broadcasts of the SEC Championship had no impact on that. Hell, from the 11/27 polls to the final regular season polls on 12/4 Alabama lost 22 points in the AP poll, 42 points in the coaches poll, and 33 points in the Harris Poll.

Gary Patterson should be up there

Richt couldn't beat Ron Zook with the best

Finishing with the 4th ranked team coming off #7 ranking is a "steady decline?"

A collective 0-3 vs Kirby.
Pruitt??

Did he have any other choice but to make changes?

Yea I forgot about Kirby my bad. He’s there also. God forbid I forget to give Georgia credit. GEORGIA IS ELITE!! Is that better? Don’t be so insecure.
