What's with UF's infatuation with Tom Petty?

So, I was trying to figure out what connection there was between Tom Petty and UF...

Alumni? Nope.
Attended college there? Nope.
Donor? Nope.
Born somewhere in the state? Yeah.
Picked up trash on campus? Yeah.

Is that the entire connection?

LSU rustled their Jimmies when he first died and now they make this an annual thing.

It’s like if State or Ole Miss was obsessed with Elvis

If you had a Traveling Wibury you’d be proud of it too. The guy was a super star.

Eta he was a devoted Gator fan

He was born in Gainesville, and worked for UF. If you are trying to make a point, try not to trivialize the main points/connections.

He's a hometown hero, and people love him. The connection is quite simple.

He grew up in Gainesville was an avid Gator fan. How many times is this going to be rehashed on this damn board?

If Elvis were born and raised in Starkville or Oxford, or if State or Ole Miss were in Tupelo this analogy would work.

It's a little known fact that he invented jorts while working on a hot summer day in jeans on UFs campus.

Add he played at a UF frat party and was treated like crap. That’s about it.

His only connection to UF is he worked on the campus's grounds crew for a short time, right?

And American Girl is about a UF girl who committed suicide at the dorms.

Rumors are some Florida fratboys heckled Tom and the young Heartbreakers back in the day. He never forgave them.

Tom Petty was a legend but I do find it odd how they don’t claim Mike Campbell

Yeah, why would the gators want to support one of the greatest american rock acts of all time who happened to originate in their backyard? Such a fricking mystery.

His childhood home was 2.9 miles away from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. So, that is maybe a little more than "somewhere in the state".

Probably has something to do with Tom Petty being one of the most celebrated musicians in American history.

Most people know Tom Petty, music fans *may* know Mike Campbell

And all for a guy who didn’t care for them. It’s a mystery all right.
