He was an average spread OC against big slow northern D's. He will struggle against the SEC D's and coaches. LSU was not built for this offense, and the transition will be painful for their fans.

I like what Canada did at Pittsburgh but he was also just OK at NC State. I like his schemes in the run game but the only thing that would worry me as a fan of any of the elite SEC schools is the word "complex". We have seen countless OC's come into the SEC with complex schemes and they never seem to be able to implement the full offense.

The problem I see with that...........your senior QB isn't very good.
Nathan Peterman wasn't really any better his junior year than Etling, go look at the stats. Both had a passer rating between 135 and 139.
Also, when you watch Peterman last season, I've seen 3 or 4 full games of his, he doesnt do anything special whatsoever. Really easy offense for the QB in that regard.

I don't think he'll be your OC for the next 3 seasons.
Hopefully not. The goal is: Your job is a stepping stone to being a head coach.
Thats how you attract the best.

I think LSU will goin through some growing pains in year 1.
2007 new OC, 'SHIP
2011 new OC, you know
2013 new OC, best offense in recent lsu history, but we still had A&M's current shite DC

He's a solid college coordinator. Like someone else said, LSU will run it up on bad defenses, but I think they'll still struggle against Auburn, Florida and Alabama because of the lack of threat at QB.
All that window dressing might squeak out a few big plays but after a few possessions it won't do much unless Etling can strike some fear into the D.

Yeah, but OL recruiting is completely different for spread teams. They need to be more mobile. I don't know if they have that yet. MC could very well be a good coach, but it could also be another 2-3 years before they have the complete personal to utilize his system.

Do you think he can turn things around year 1?
Considering how low the bar is set, I think he will show marked improvement for the unit.

LSU will be just fine. Knowing the offense won't be predictable is refreshing. The difference with Canada here and where he coached in the past is he has skilled playmakers that will play on Sundays and he actually has a defense that won't give up many points.

His longest stint has been 3 seasons on two occasions. Therefore, I agree that he probably won't be around longer than that.
The one thing that gives me some hope for this season is that he has always had to implement his offense in a hurry. See his one year at Pitt as an example.

I mean, this applies to every college football team, not uniquely LSU.
The problem that has been uniquely LSU is very little QB development and a game plan and play calls Helen Keller would see coming.

I think your offense will improve, but who knows with overall team in the long run
Ed has been a head coach, he wasn't good. Les was very, very good. Les just couldn't beat the monster that is Saban. I don't know that Ed is exactly a better replacement.

The Pitt QB was no better than Etling.

Ha. I love that assumption. No team has converted to the spread and maintained a low scoring D, even Saban.

I am too. Look at Peterman's Jr. year TD/int. ratio and then look at Etling last year. Night and day.
ETA Peterman 20/8
Etling 11/5

I think I read where they gave up 10 sacks in the Saturday scrimmage. If this is the case it will be a long (non productive) season. Oline will be the key.
