Not exactly.
Are you telling me the '73 Sugar Bowl between Bama and ND "didn't matter"? Who knew?

This is a first.
Aggy fans now have two reasons to hate this thread.

Judging coaches from different eras by today's standards really doesn't work. Until the late 70s any team from the South, be it SEC or SWC, started in a hole as far as rankings and who wins the national title.
Did Bear Bryant use the rules in place to stack his teams with talent? Well. Yeah. Of course he did. That is why you hire a head coach, to use everything legal he can to build his team.
Would he be an effective coach today? Well, being willing to adapt on offensive and focusing on a strong defense and good special teams play doesn't seem like a bad formula. Hell, if anything he'd have the edge on Saban who frequently has woeful kickers.
The Bear was the Bear. He was the best for his era of coaching. Saban is Saban. He is the best for this era of coaching.

The past is always idealized. In his time, Bear was the best coach in the nation. He defined a generation and created the Alabama brand that has led to the success the program has continued to enjoy.
Is he deserving of the God-like mytholy Gumps ascribe to him? No. In context, however, his place in CFB lore is well earned.

Nick Saban: 14-10 (.583)
Ed Orgeron: 2-1 (.667)
Saban is 9-3 in bowl games at Alabama = 75%
He was only 3&2 at LSU because, even with Nick F'n Saban, LSU isn't as good as Alabama.
note: bowl games do not include playoff final games, where Saban is 2&2 and the only coach to be in the playoffs every single year
edit to laugh about the ridiculous comments, when Saban signed up with Alabama, that he wouldn't do as well as he did at LSU. I knew that was goofy as hell.

I mostly agree except that Wallace Wade is mostly responsible, in my opinion, for first establishing the "Alabama brand"

You know your God King coached 6 seasons at places other than LSU before going to Red Stick, right?

That's not true. The AP did it in 65 and switched permanently in 68. And the FWAA always waited until after the bowls.

Football was different then. There wasn’t such a large gap in competitiveness between the top 5 and the rest of the division like there is now. So, in short, no. The Bear is not overrated.

Had Bear stayed at Aggy, we probably would not have wandered in the wilderness for 30 years, so there's that.

He was 24-1 vs State while at Bama.

A State fan calling an actual winning record (15-12) “abysmal” is pretty ironic
