So 1965 and 1978 weren't mulligans in your opinion?

In cheating? Maybe, maybe not.
The Bear is the Bear, just like Rockne was the GOAT in his era.
Bryant cheated his arse off, tilted every tale possible.. DGAF, He's a Legend of the game and always will be.

Bear almost makes the top 20 of all time.
1. Les Miles
2. Glenn Edward Schembechler
3. Lou Holtz
4. Woody Hayes
5. Ara Parseghian
6. Tom Osborne
7. Lou Tepper
8. Urban Meyer
9. Steve Spurrier
10. Jimmy Johnson
11. Barry Switzer
12. Jim Tressel
14. R.C. Slocum
15. Bret Bielema
16. Ed Orgeron
17. Charlie Weiss
18. Derek Dooley
19. Phil Fulmer
20. Dennis Franchione
Bear and Saban would be in the next tier of coaches. Not bad when you think about how many men have been head coaches in the history of college football.
The difference between Bear/Saban and #1-20 is, #1-20 didn't cheat. That is an important virtue when discussing all time coaches.

No, because it did not pit two teams against each other with the winner take all by design. Bama won it in 65 after the #1, #2 and #3 team lost. It wasn't because ABC sold the Bama vs Neb game as the NC Game. In 78, it was the Bowl matchup with Independent Penn St that won the NC. Mulligan's occur when you ignore the rules and get another ball.

He lost two home games at Bryant Denny Stadium.
Florida and Southern Miss.
I was at both.

Yes. You won’t get many to agree to it because of nostalgia, but the reality was, he was putting in far more effort than most. Football didn’t mean nearly as much to colleges back then because it wasn’t profitable likeit is now.
I do believe he was instrumental in that change though. He showed that it could’ve profitable. He was ahead of his time more so than he was “just a great coach”. I’m not saying he didn’t know how to coach or was bad at it. But if you went back in time and took him in his prime and stuck him on a team today. He wouldn’t be nearly as successful.

I mean you're a fricking idiot from the start. But then I get to this part and
Talk about not knowing shite. I think just about every school Lou Holtz ever coached at faced major violations as a result of his time at that school. And for a variety of reasons ranging from academic, to steroids etc.
I've seen articles that go so far as to mention him among the greatest cheaters of all time.
I think maybe you're just butthurt.

I was gonna say "You've lost your damn mind" but instead, I'll just theorize that you were dropped on your head as a young child. Or yesterday.

This thread is dumb and disrespectful.
In no way, shape or form is Bear Bryant overrated.
And this is coming from an AU fan.

Dear 3down10. BAWAHAAAAAAAA, my man, you took this way too serious. This was obviously a dig at Bear and Saban. Lou Tepper should have been your first clue. If you got to Dooley and still thought I was serious maybe football isn't for you. However, I thank you for responding with such fervency. I didn't think it would be that easy to get a bammer riled up.
Still laughing.
