This is why conference champions should never automatically get a bid into the playoff.

Nick Saban was right when he said that not all of the divisions were created equal. If you get into a championship game scenario where a key player gets hurt, and a huge upset ensues, you could potentially have a four or even five loss team win the conference. There is no way in hell that a four or five loss team should ever compete for a national championship. Don't believe me? In 2012, a 7-5 Wisconsin team upset the Nebraska Cornhuskers to win the Big Ten Championship.

Then what is the point of a conference champion? If it shouldn't be taken into consideration then why make the division winners play an extra game that could potentially keep them out of the playoff?

Very rare thing to happen, but it would only have to happen once for everybody to be up in arms. You made a very good and valid point.

It should be taken into consideration but it should never be an automatic ticket, regardless of whether or not the playoff ever expands to 6 or 8 teams.

The same it has always been? To name a conference champion. Do you really think that a 5 loss Wisconsin team would deserve to be in the playoffs, while a one loss Alabama be left out?

That’s part of what makes it fun.
Everyone has a shot.
It’s a game, not a royal line of succession.

Committee has explained what the conference championship is used for when evaluating teams.

While true, a 5 loss team should not get into the playoffs, unless there is a 32 team playoff, and I'm not sure they should get in then.

Yes it did. Given the situation in the east and UGA looking strong, y'all might get bit in the arse by it sometime in the future. I just think if you're gonna have conference championships they should mean something. Being rewarded for sitting on the couch while other teams play is bull shite. But that's the buckeye / bama way.

Bragging rights within the conference. The same thing it's been for the majority of college football history.

Losing to LSU fricked Auburn this year. Tell Gus to quit shitting the bed every year in a game or two he shouldn't lose. That is Auburn's problem, not losing to a very good UGA team in the SEC title game.

The chances of a 4 or 5 loss team winning a conference championship is virtually nil.

Losing to LSU had no impact on bama sitting on the couch and resting while we continued the gauntlet?

And we both know if we had beaten LSU but lost in the CC, Bama would still be in there. Don't expect you to complain but at least recognize y'all get a red carpet to the playoffs every year. Based on season accomplishments, Bama has no business being in the playoffs. Way to beat Tennessee and a God awful FSU team!

I wonder how many people would sympathize with Bama last year if they had lost to Florida. 12-0 and was forced to play an extra game. Oh wait I’m sure that’s different for some reason
