Yeah you’re right. It’s way more southwestern than Arizona and New Mexico.

Agree. Texas is its own thing. It's not a part of the south. Neither is Oklahoma. They are part of the midwest.

Texas has more of a right to be associated with the Deep South than Oklahoma.

Want to know how I know you've never been east of I-45?

Of all the "non-Southern" states, Oklahoma and Texas probably share the most characteristics with the South. And that makes sense as most of the white settlers of Oklahoma and Texas came from the South - especially the non-English populations (Scotch-Irish, Irish, German, etc).

My interactions with Oklahomans through the years always felt like I was talking with Appalachian people that I knew. Texas was settled by all manner of folks, but it has Southern heritage (old South) and the backwoods Southern heritage (Scotch Irish, Scottish, German, etc) along with those who came directly from Germany. Of course, they also have very unique parts that make then different - Texas with the Spanish influence, Oklahoma with the Native Americans and both of them with parts of their state bordering places like New Mexico and Colorado and different geography.

So, in the end, they are their own unique cultures, but they share a lot with us and are more "us" than really anywhere else that isn't considered "Southern" outside of maybe West Virginia and other parts of more Northern Appalachia (West Va, SE Ohio, Western PA).

That's a terrible argument.

Thank you. Especially the eastern half of OK. Anyone ever heard Blake Shelton or Carrie Underwood talk? They are both from Eastern Oklahoma. It is definitely the South.

I've lived in Oklahoma. There is much in Oklahoma that is similar to a southern state. There can even be southern accents. But is does range from being south to midwest and even west out in the panhandle.

Texas is Texas.

Oklahoma is a Midwestern fly over state.

Neither are Southern and I’m going to fricking hate everyone trying to pass them off as such.

The SEC as a southern conference was mortally wounded in 2012 and this is just the final death rattle.

It’s country, not Southern. Just because they share something in common (country folks) doesn’t make them the same

Blake's from Kentucky. We just stole him. He does talk with the Okie accent though.

Don’t forget the Cherokee and Creek who were forced to move out there.

Still, it’s no more Southern than Maryland is the South (it has history but It’s not the South)
