No athletic director.
Just lost a head coach.
Signing day is next week.
Then there is the transfer portal.

It feels like the safe thing to do is promote Zach Arnett to head coach. We've been worried about losing him to a G5 head coaching job, but is he ready for an SEC job? You could probably go get a top level offensive coordinator from the Leach tree to come in. State's roster is married to the Air Raid at this point.

Then there is the timing. You have to hold this recruiting class together, but you can't name Arnett before the memorial services are done. If you wait until after the bowl game, it may be too late.

Then there is the transfer portal. Everyone is lighting up their stadium maroon, flying pirate flags and posting beautiful tributes on Twitter, but there isn't a team in the nation that wouldn't pick off our top talent if given the chance.

The wildcard that State has is its President, Mark Keenum. He's the chair of the College Football Playoff and was the leading force in the expansion to 12. He has great contacts and he will do what is best for Mississippi State, long term. That might not be what the "safest" play is. Having Keenum, an athletics focused university President, almost helps offset not having an athletic director in this unique situation.

I kept thinking about players

Imagine you’re an incoming player and Leach sold you. But everything that’s happened, you no longer want to go to State

How long do you wait, morally, to announce that? Maybe I’m thinking too much into it

I feel for State man. What an awful situation.

I could be wrong - but I think recruits will stay with their eye on transferring next year. I am just not sure they will feel right about bailing at this point

I’ve had this same thought. I’d feel kind of gross or wrong backing out of a commitment right now. Really awkward situation for a kid to be in.

Honestly not having an AD right now is probably ok. I doubt most AD's would want to walk in and have this hire be the first thing you do, plus it's not like recruits care if you have an AD or not.

State needs to hire on of Leach's Offensive disciplines, it made MSU very competitive. It would also honor Leach.

I kind of feel like that's what we'll do. I think Holgorsen makes the most sense if that is the case.

Leach may have sold the program but if you go to Starkville and are not sold on the people or the place, maybe you are more the Royal "we" that the communal "we" and maybe you missed what is actually there.

Remember that Leach wasn’t the only one recruiting. Arnett has his guys and we have a whole staff of people dedicated to getting people to come to MSU for different reasons.

I agree that quick stability is key in the next few weeks and retaining the current staff is part of that equation.

Most people at State love Arnett and want to give him a shot. Keep Spurrier and make him OC then fill in the gaps with positional coaches/recruiters.

We have a hell of a staff thanks to Leach. He has left us in great shape and we would be dumb to not try and retain that.

Gotta give Arnett a year. Get his contract locked down with his agent by Friday. Go hire a pass heavy , up and coming Offensive Coordinator. MSU probably promotes their AD for within but you still gotta interview some candidates from now until New Year’s. Hate even thinking about this stuff when Leach has only been gone a day and a half. You know it’s tough on people in that Athletic Dept who loved and respected him. Gotta be surreal that he is gone.

Do you think Spurrier Jr. run the offense? He has coached under some great OC’s/play callers.

Arnett has potential.

He’s a really good DC.

I think you give him a chance here.

Such a bad taste post. Can the MSU and SEC fans mourn Leach for just one week before people start looking for his replacement? You should be ashamed dude.

State doesn't have a ton of high end talent committed. Most of those guys wouldn't get another SEC offer. Not saying they are bad players, just they fit what he wanted to do. If State keeps a similar O and D, they should be able to maintain their current class

I mean some of their own fans have made posts wondering about it. Sometimes it's good to talk about other things for a bit.
