However, the counter would be that the state lotto programs make it harder to get into the big school which helps trickle down better students to secondary schools and improves them. I think what really happens is those kids who can't quite make the cut are split between the Georgia Southern/MTSUs of the world and the Alabama/Auburn/Ole Miss' of the world.

Yeah the chain is getting longer. I suspect Auburn and Alabama are pushing kids to Ole Miss these days. Whereas we (AU/UA) may have been fallbacks at one point, now we've got our own fallbacks we feed. People want the experience and they'll pay for it. SMU is a school that really benefitted from that, for example.

Better than expected, actually. Waiting for the typical nonsense about an Alabama education.

UGA/UF/A&M (no order)

Alabama/Auburn

Pretty impressive for the state of Alabama to have two large state schools in the Top 6 of the SEC.

Tennessee and Missouri have much larger populations and only one big state public school that's enticing for kids to want to attend, yet perform worse academically.

Alabama has about the same population as Louisiana and Kentucky too.

I don't necessarily blame you. USC and Tennessee are both moving steadily up of late, but I don't think the consensus will catch up for a while.

UGA with a Med School and a College of Engineering even dating back just 50 years would put us in the top 10 public schools. As it is, both programs are in their infancy.

Athens sales itself to high end professors. Most of my professor in my major were Ivy or Oxford educated.

so you're saying the State of Alabama was ahead of its time

I knew it

I got an acceptance letter from Auburn that stated they needed to see my ACT scores, then the very next day got another letter stating I was good to go. it was weird.

I took the ACT's with one of the biggest hangovers I have ever had, even threw up during. Still got an awesome score

I don’t know the numbers, but Dallas and Houston may have a bigger overall impact for Alabama than Atlanta. Alabama has a larger out-of-state student population than in-state.

Dont know if just a Northern thing, but most of the schools I applied to up north or looked at, required ACT

Actually, admission requirements can depend more on the type of institution.

Many top schools—often private—accept standardized test scores as supplemental documents, but don’t require them.
Variables like class rank and GPA, along with “outside of the box” admissions packets go farther with those selection committees, who court candidates who aren’t categorized by “crude” testing metrics.

As an anecdote ... a close family friend of ours was accepted with full softball schollies at both Rice and Stanford. Her application consisted of a dossier of her four years in HS, along with a digital, simulated file of her acting as a sportscaster, describing her personal achievements. They ate it up. She was also admitted to Brown and Yale, though she didn’t receive the same scholarship offers.

My ACT was not awesome. I didn't prep and it was much worse than my SAT score.

Thankfully, Auburn at that point wasn't too concerned

Terry College of Business has been pulling some insanely good business people into the world of teaching. Looking up some professor's salaries helped me see just how UGA was pulling this off. Terry is just swimming in money at this point, and it reflects with how they're able to hire these people.

My admissions to Alabama included a video tape of me explaining my suggestions to Coach Shula on the best way to creatively use the Maryland I. They ate it up.

I only took the ACT. Made a 26. Obviously not impressive. But along with other parts of the application process I got scholarships for engineering at Alabama. But that was 2001. No way I’d get that great of a deal now.
