Pulling for a rival school because you have good friends from there - anyone?

I've got good friends who went to Auburn and Ole Miss (and also a kid at Arkansas right now), so I find myself pulling for those schools just to see my friends enjoy the moment.

Then there are schools like State and USCe who I generally pull for because, let's face it, they are mostly non-threatening on the football field.

But, I do have my limits. Any friends from Florida, umat, or Texas can cry me a river. The latter two mainly the result of having lived in Texas a long part of my adult life. No bad blood. I just ain't ever going to pull for your school.

How does this play out with y'all?

I guess it depends on the sport. I would not root for Ole Miss to win in football but baseball I am rooting for them.

I would pull for the Taliban, or should I say ISIS, before I pulled for Mississippi State.

Sure. I’m supposed to hate State the most but I have enough people close to me that are state fans I can empathize with them. It’s harder for me to find any reason to pull for Arkansas or Tennessee tbh. Nothing redeemable there

It's just baseball. It doesn't give you any bragging rights really. It's just for fun. Plus it's the only sport either school has a chance of winning a championship in.

In case of divided loyalties, stay out of the conversation.

Not really. For me, I just think about my friends when I see their team doing well. Just as they do for me. I get texts during games (Alabama 2021) for example.

Being military, I know die hard fans from several programs and they cross my mind a lot

this is true.

Another element is the game day experience at schools. I've had mostly good, fun interaction with all of the SECw schools, including Bama on big games and the Aggies.

SEC East? Hell no. Tenner, UGA, and Florida fans are absolute asshats on game day. Well, tenner just seems socially awkward.

Got several friends that went to Ole Miss, including one who played basketball there under Rod Barnes and I'm pulling for them I guess, but I wouldn't consider Ole Miss a rival of UGA although they were a cross-division opponent back when the SEC had two cross overs.

Sounds about right with me, a UGA partisan, when it comes to Auburn. The fact that I have good friends back home in Georgia who are Auburn grads cause I don't ever want them to have anything they can throw in my face while we are out on the lake in a bass boat. I don't have any fishing buddies who are GT or UF partisans. Still hate UF with a passion though. The trade school on North Avenue, well, I just feel sorry for them these days. I predict that Georgia Southern will soon pass them by as the #2 sports power in the state.

One of closest friends is from Greenville, MS. Huge Ole Miss fan! Been pulling for them since 94 or so.

I do this often, as long as LSU's not the opponent

I might not do it at home by myself, but if I'm around someone I know and their team is playing, I generally root for their team with them. I may give them grief during the game when something goes bad, but I'm not gonna be "that guy" that has to be the opposition at the bar/table/living room etc.

Most of them do the same thing, root for LSU when we catch games together against another opponent.

"Tell" them I'm pulling for their team? Sure. "Really" pulling for their team? Very rarely.

Yeah man one of my best buddies I have went to Ole Miss. Lives up near Olive Branch. I travel up that way often to watch football and baseball and I got to say, that would be my alternate team outside of LSU.

I like the area and the people up that way in north Mississippi.

I have very close friends who are life long fans and graduates of Arkansas, UT, and LSU. I pull for Arky in pretty much anything (obviously not when playing Bama). I give my UT and LSU friends grief non-stop and actively root against them (often in their homes). My UT friend feels the same way and does the same thing. I’ve occasionally pretended to pull for UT out of pity just to piss him off. My LSU friend thinks I’m a dick. They’re probably both right I guess.
