I understand. I don't agree but i do understand your point.
I believe the SEC winning helps the conference. Prestige, money, interest, etc. but I certainly understand if you don't give a shite about anyone but your own team winning it. Most probably agree with you.

The financial incentive comes from the ppl who profit off of it. ESPN, big network, fox etc, and anyone whose paycheck gets signed by them. Also last time I checked the beat writer in Boise doesnt have a lot of cachet in terms of college football influence but the talking heads at espn and fox do. They’re the drivers of this but I imagine the local guys you’re framing would indulge for clicks as well.

Most of the AP voters are local beat writers. For every ESPN guy with a vote, there's 10 beat writers.

You want your conference to be the best. That way, if you can win it, you can win out.
Look at those years of SEC domination, with LSU, Florida, Auburn etc all going back and forth. The team that won out, would then win the national title game. Then Alabama, then Georgia. It gave you a baseline you'd know to work towards.
Right now, it's not certain the team good enough to win the SEC can even win a playoff game. Take the teams that made the SEC championship the past couple seasons- UGA won in Atlanta, is 0-2 in the playoffs. Texas lost a couple years ago, then went 1-1. Alabama last year, same thing, 1-1 and got blown out. Tennessee is 0-1, Ole Miss managed to go 2-1.
Does that scream "this conference deserves to get a lot of bids" to you?

I think the conference pride thing peaked in the early 00s because of the west coast backlash to the 03 LSU championship and then leaving AU out the very next year. The national media didn't like us uncultured swine in the deep south very much

Media didn't want LSU in 2003, it was supposed to be Oklahoma and USC. That's why there was a split champ, even though LSU won. *I don't think there would have been a split if OU won.
2004, they picked USC and OU. Auburn was left out, despite being undefeated and having beat defending champ LSU; and there really wasn't any media grumbling at all.
2006, the media was pushing for an Ohio State-Michigan rematch. Barring that, they were willing to settle for Ohio State-USC... but USC lost late in the year, and they were "stuck" with Florida. That game was supposed to be a blowout. It was

TX beating Ohio State would at least give the SEC a talking point. A TX loss and the talk goes on until the playoff.
