Thanks. Sobriety can be a wonderful thing.

I have nothing to brag about. But, I do like to share my story in hopes that it may get others to give it a shot. Not carrying around all of that extra weight makes the day to day aspect of life so much better.

Exercise (alone) rarely worked for me. Started doing the Keto diet about a year ago & lost 50 lbs in about 6 months & have maintained from there. Could stand to lose another 10-15 but am confident enough now to go shirtless to the pool.

Food selection is good: meats, cheeses, eggs, fruits with “berry” in name and vegetables with notable exceptions. Obviously no breads but you can make a substitute out of almond flour & cheese.

Congrats!

I can relate to that feeling when you finally get down to around the goal you set out to get to or even push beyond. I never thought I could be where I'm at in my mid 40s.

Man that is great TL, fantastic achievement!

I think anyone who is in a bad place right now, the best advice is to just get started exercising and make it a daily thing and build on it, but do not miss a single day. And it can start with a a walk around the block. Choose whatever diet they want, but limit the sugars which also mean starchy carbs. Get lots of veggies. Never enough veggies. I like the high fat moderate protein or higher protein moderate fat but it also depends on your body and what kind of exercise you are doing.

And don't overdo it on the first day/week or you will not be able to get out of bed and keep going.

And let me add, quit fricking drinking. When you are working to get yourself in shape, cut out the booze while you are cutting weight. You won't miss it. Get a hobby. Join a chess club, start side business, anything.

Excellent advice. Hell, I didn't even start running until I had lost all of my weight. Walking and excercise bike along with workout videos on YouTube did the trick. My personal favorite video was the Bob Harper Super Strength one. Started with 6 lb weights and once I got up to 12 lb weights, I went to weight training and resistance bands.

Yep the first week or so is just getting the engine cranked up and getting the cobwebs out and the blood flowing. It's a big adjustment for 99% of the folks who haven't been exercising.

Age plays a part as well.

He was 500 pounds with heart / kidney issues.

Finding someone to write a policy was probably pretty difficult.

Not to be a dick, but do you think he would had been able to get a policy from an insurance company in his state of health at an affordable price?

The Gofundme is for his kids college fund...Jared was not wealthy but a humble, great all around guy.

Acting like weight lose is a one size fits all method is pretty ignorant. I’ve seen people diet together, eat the same food exactly and excessive the exact same with wildly different results. Don’t get me wrong no matter how slow and hard it might be any progress is better than none. Trust me I know but fortunately for me I lose weight easily. But not everybody is like that.

It does. But it can be extremely tough for someone who didn’t have that reinforced most of their lives like Jared. Add to it that after he stopped playing sports but kept eating like he was still playing, it makes sense how quickly he ballooned up.

It’s just incredibly depressing knowing he was making a huge effort to try to lose the weight. And I can’t imagine the pain he endured trying to be active while holding that kind of weight on his frame.

He was trying very hard which is why I was surprised when o heard he passed. He bad to work super hard for a long time just to be able to slowly trot down the street for a bit. Sad story indeed.

The body also needs to heal itself. Fasting into autophagy has been a transformation for me. As someone once told me, you can't repair the highway without stopping the traffic. I have never been heavy and have stayed in relatively good shape with fits and starts of being in ridiculously good shape, but when I began a weekly regimen of fasting, my risk factors plummeted such as diabetes and heart disease markers dropped significantly.

This really can’t be emphasized enough.

It also is good to go to your doctor and have your blood drawn and get lab work done.

If there are any metabolic or blood sugar issues, the labs will identify them and your doctor can help correct them.

I gained 60 pounds in a couple of months when I first got sober. Started exercising and my doctor injected me with one of those insulin pens (I’m not diabetic, but probably would be today had she not done that).

I lost the weight over the next 120 days or so. Went from 175 to 236, then back down to 180 - all in the course of 7-8 months. I’ve been able to maintain 180 for the past 5 years, lifting weights or running on an elliptical every day.

This is the under appreciated part of all this.

I knew both Jared and Mel and both were in the same coaching school I grew up in a generation before. Not only did my coaches makes sure I was eating massively at meals but they were stuffing my pockets with PB&J sandwiches for in between snacks. Back then a football PB&J was about 1/2 jar of PB and half jar of J in each sandwich (and they would put 4 or 5 in our pockets).

Not sure what they do about calories in the modern era but pretty sure I was doing about 6,000 to 8,000 calories a day when in training. No way I could eat that today but in your late 30's and early 40's that metabolism starts slowing down and it can be hard to stop eating that way when you need to cut that by 80% when you hit that age.

Mel used to hang out with me a lot later in his life and I think he was around 450 not to long before he passed away.

This is the part that has been hitting me the hardest!

Yeah he was great fun to watch but he really was great in person. Lot of old farts who were SoB's and still above ground. Here was a truly good guy and already gone.
