There's no requirement. With that being said I'm suspicious of anybody who began rooting for Bama in 2008 or 2009.

I have literally never met someone like that. I dont know any college bandwagon fans. Now NFL? Oh yeah

I attended, graduated, and worked for LSU as my first legitimate job so you could say I'm a pretty big fan.

I see a frick ton on facebook. Like random Bama fans from El Paso. One of my friends is an FSU alum from the dominican republic, never has been to Bama but is a big fan. He couldnt even tell you who the DC is

Is it possible to be a "true fan" just because you love the team even though you never went to the school?

Does getting a Masters from a school make you less of a fan than someone who got their Undergrad there or does just getting a degree from that school count?

Obviously not. I grew up in New Orleans and was an LSU fan all my life. I went to college on scholarship at a really good university in the Northeast. If you tell me I am not an LSU fan I will ask you to kindly frick off.

I know plenty of people who didn't go to Alabama or Auburn that are still fans. The overwhelming majority went to smaller schools on scholarship that either don't have football or play in a sub division. Growing up in the south, you grow up cheering for a team and it doesn't disappear because you decided to take a different road academically. On the other hand, there are a lot of Walmart sidewalk fans out there but there is a stark contrast in the types of fandom each has by the way they act.

you're probably a new fan.

most of family are LSU grads and still reside in Louisiana. I'm a fan of my alma mater first, but their paths rarely cross.

Any degree. Here are the tiers of fandom:

Tier 1: You donate big money to the program or were a former player
Tier 2: You are an alumnus, either grad or undergrad
Tier 3: You are married to an alumnus
Tier 4: You pay for someone to go to school at said institution

___________Line of shite Talk, Anyone Below This Line Can't Act Superior to Someone Above It__________

Tier 5: Your family member went to said university for more than one generation (so mom and dad, or dad and grandad)
Tier 6: Your family member went to said university for a single generation (dad, mom, sister, etc.)

___________Line of "we" Talk, Anyone Below This Line Can't Call The Team "we"___________

Tier 7: You were born in the same town as said football program.
Tier 8: You were born in the same state as said football program
Tier 9: You were born elsewhere but currently live in the same town as said football program
Tier 10: You were born elsewhere but currently live in the same state as said program

___________Line of Respect, Anyone Below This Line Can't Be Respected as a Fan___________

Tier 11: You like said football program for some reason not listed so far (probably because they win a lot) except the team colors or logo
Tier 12: You like said team because of the team colors or logo

If you grew up in the 90s and are a fan of (at least two of the four following): the Yankees, Cowboys, Red Wings, and Bulls then people have reason to view your fandom as something of a ridiculous insecurity.

If you grew up a fan because your family were die hards then fine, but just latching onto a good team you aren't personally connected to is probably because you just like rooting for a successful team.

So, that makes me a Tier 2 OM fan, a Tier 2 Gator fan, a Tier 4 UCA fan, a Tier 6 UK fan, a Tier 9 Hog fan, and a Tier 12 UNLV fan. I am conflicted.

It shouldn't be that hard.

Ole Miss or UF should be your top two teams. I am sure there is one you associate with more (undergrad maybe?) so that becomes your #1 and the other is your #2. Root for them both except when they play each other (which is easy due to different divisions).

For your UCA fandom, that doesn't conflict with the other two so I say have at it. Out of your other fandoms I would drop Arky (same division as #1 or #2) and UNLV (liking a team for its colors is gay). Your UK fandom is a-ok during basketball season.

Easy peasy. If anyone else needs help sorting out their fandom let me know.

Well there are tiers below 12 but I didn't list them.

Tier 13 would be something like "my team is in the same conference as said team."

Tier 14 would be something like "I like a certain team to piss off my parents."

Tier 15 would be something like "I am a foreigner and the first person in America who was nice to me was a Tier 2 fan of said team."

Tier 16: "They often play a team I hate."
Tier 17: "A person I am trying to impress is a tier 1-4 fan of this team."
Tier 17: "They have the most T-shirts at my local Walmart."
Tier 18: "I like their mascot."
Tier 19: "I like their academics and I want my kids to go there."
Tier 20: "I like the self esteem boost their success imparts to me."

20 is as low as I can think of.

I just hate people who try to decide for their kids what college they are going to. Let the kids decide.

That fricking mom in Gilmore Girls is scum to me for that reason. She is a Tier 14 and Tier 19 Harvard fan, and the fricking writers want to make her a sympathetic main character. That goddamn slut should have closed her legs at 16 and figured out what fandom really is. Every time my wife makes me watch the show I have to comment how much I hate the mom.

Where do you think we all grew up, in Mongolia? You seriously think we don't know what the fricking South is like?
