I am an Alabama who didn't go to Alabama, I chose to attend UAB. Alabama was an option, it wasn't that I couldn't get in there, it was simply that UAB was the best situation for me at that time. I've been an Alabama fan my entire life, and will always be one, but I couldn't let that dictate where I chose to go to school.
I know I am an Alabama fan, whether a bunch of elitist people who consider themselves better than me think so or not. People don't know each person's situation, and therefore should not question them.

here's the thing. There are 2474 four-year universities in this country. There are 128 FBS football teams. That leaves students from 2346 universities that have the option of either 1) not being "allowed" to be a fan; or 2) being called a sidewalk fan
It's stupid. The majority of people become a fan of a football team when they are children. Some end up going to school at that college, some don't. It shouldn't make them any less a fan of a school they rooted for growing up because they chose to go to school somewhere else or, for whatever reason, were unable to attend college altogether. We're talking about sports teams here, not some random guy pimping the science department of a random college that he didn't go to. I view college fans not a whole lot differently than professional fans. Then I differentiate those between actual fans and bandwagon fans. HTH
It all comes down to how much fandom you claim.
If you are someone who has no official tie to a team outside of being born in the state, has never even been to the campus, but roots for that team for fun and is respectful to other fans then who cares who you root for?
If on the other hand you are that same person but you are an a-hole about your fandom- aka you use "we" a lot and talk down to alumni of other schools with less successful football programs- then you can go frick yourself with a rake and I am going to call you out for not being a real fan.
The trick to it is, the EXACT same type of person who would be offended by my criteria for being called a true fan is the EXACT same type of person who wants to claim the superiority or ego boost that comes from being for example a Bama fan. So therefore I feel fine sticking to my standards- even if I believe in exceptions- because it hits the right nail on the head.
If people didn't try to live vicariously through college sports this wouldn't be an issue, and this thread wouldn't pop up every week. But people do.

I've been a Bama fan for over 42 years - I am a season ticket holder and support the athletic program. I didn't attend the University, but I did name my boys after Alabama football players. I love Bama Football. Oh, I don't live in a trailer.

Who does she root for when they play each other
Usually LSU. It is just weird to me. When she was in undergrad, she wore a big LSU sweatshirt right in the middle of the Bama student section at Bryant Denny one year.

The NFL has no true fans. Sorry LSIxU, no more NFL posts from you.

If you attend/attended another school with a football team and are still a Bama fan, go frick yourself.
This one applies to me! yea!
Oh, and to make it better, I went to AU. During the Curry years. And still, I'm a Bama fan.

why is naming your child after a football player funny? really?

Maybe you're emotionally damaged ever since Wisconsin's scrub QB, named after Bart Starr btw, started LSixU's inevitable downward spiral.

nah I just think it's pretty rednecky, for lack of a better word, to name your child after a football player unless said football player was related to you or had a profound impact on your life, but to each his own.

whole topic is dumb. i don't care if a guy who pulls for my team went to school there with me, before me, after me, or not at all. As long as he isn't a fair weather fan it really doesn't matter to me
This is the right response. It's great to have such a proud tradition and legacy that people want to be part of that. I welcome all who make a choice based on that, not just because they like winning and change when things don't go as well.

I was an Alabama fan at age 12. At graduation I received a FULL SCHOLARSHIP to another university that was a top school in my major. But to be a true fan I must forfeit $$$$$ in scholarship money and incur massive student loan debt?
The school you attend should be your number one fandom. Otherwise you're a child stuck thinking that what you liked when you were 12 was important. If you went to an FCS school or a team half way across the country, you can still be a part time Bama fan. If you went to another SEC school or an ACC school, be loyal to your school, not some immature childhood crush.

you absolutely can be a true fan without graduating from said school, you're just a lower class of fan.
Shannon Terry never attended Bama but is a fan. He sold Rivals for $100M and then sold a large part of 247 to CBS Sports. His net worth is approaching $60M+. Is he a lower class Bama fan?
Channing Tatum never attended Bama. Neither did Lucas Black. Both are successful actors worth millions. Lower class?

He is saying a lower class OF FAN. As in an alumni is on a higher tier of fandom than a sidewalk fan.
He did not say a lower class fan, as in a person that doesn't make as much money.

Here's the thing that I suppose I get, but not 100%. I mean you're a season ticket holder, so there is no denying you are supportive and that automatically checks the fan boxes.
I just can't figure out why.
I mean, you're not a fan of some high school team you didn't attend...right?
Did any family attend?

It's amazing how hard reading comprehension appears to be for some posters

Bad investments? How did he lose 40M?

I'd say it depends on when you adopt said team. If you became a Bama fan in 2008 I'd say frick you. If your sister/momma had all the games on in the trailer park since you were little. Sure.
Yes! I slid in at 2007
