What if they only went there for grad school? What about online programs?

Don't know why it bothers so many people, SEC stadiums would be over half empty if only alumni attended

Cheer for whoever you want for whatever reason you want... for as long as you want.

I am not an Auburn alum. I grew up an Auburn fan, but I have a different alma mater, one that I chose for reasons no one would argue with.

My childhood, family, etc favor Auburn, but if push came to shove, I would have to align myself to my alma mater first.

So, in answer to your question, you can be a huge fan of a school you didn't go to. But as college fanhood goes, I reserve special deference for people who went there. I would never say I was a bigger/better fan than them.

All that to say, that outside of the context of answering this question, I don't take it so seriously.

What I don't get, and I had a good rant on the MSB about this when the Cubs won the WS, is the people that were born and raised across the country claiming a team 2000 miles away as their team. It's just weird to me.

That's because they're bandwagon shitheads.

Idk about y'all but when I see a truck/car littered with script A's I automatically assume neither them nor any family member attended Alabama and they in fact living in a trailer. Works offshore or something like that as well.

Is it possible to be a "true fan" just because you love the team even though you were too stupid to get accepted to the school?

No. There are several kids under 18 that are huge fans of colleges. Maybe their parents went there. Maybe a grandparent. And on the flip side, there are plenty of adults who have kids that graduated from or are currently attending a college that the parents did not graduate from. My parents are Alabama fans. I am too, although I went to Troy because they offered me an academic scholarship. I still enjoy watching Alabama football. Both of my sisters went to Alabama. Along with several other family members. Just because I chose to get my college and grad school education at another university shouldn't mean I can't cheer for Alabama.

Also, my dad now follows Troy football. He also did not attend Alabama, but he went to UAB and then South Alabama for his education. Neither school had football teams in the late 70s and he went to many Alabama games at Legion Field while he was a UAB student.

Interesting replies given that there was just a thread here last week where pretty much everyone agreed that it was more important to pick your college based on education that it was to go to a school of the team you love.

You can be whatever the frick you want to be. Don't worry about whether others think you are a "true fan" or not or what others think are the requirements to be considered a "true fan."

I'm happy as hell that Alabama has worked their way into a position to have a huge following.

Our band wagon is HUGE - climb aboard one and all!

What if you moved to the town the university is in? I'd justify switching then just for convenience sake.

The following rules apply to when you can use "we" when referring to a team:

1. You graduated from there.

2. You married someone who graduated from there.

3. You are paying for someone who will graduate from there (like parents).

[In Alabama]
4. You were born in the state and you never achieved much else in life and so you depend on the Crimson Tide football success to not blow your brains out.

On the flipside college football would have the success of the XFL (ie not much) without the tie to universities.

Major minor league football doesn't exist for a reason.

Legitimate reasons to be a fan of a particular school:

1) If you attended that school
2) If you have a child or parent or other close family member that attended that school.
3) If you are from the state in which that school is located, particularly if that school is a state funded institution.
4) If you grew up a fan of that particular school.

Illegitimate reasons:

1) You like them because they win a lot
2) You have formerly liked some other team and switched due to some other reason than listed above
3) You like the colors

If you live a different state, didn't go there, don't have a family member that did, and didn't grow up liking them, you are not a true fan.
