Is it necessary to graduate from "said University" in order to be a legitimate fan?

Is it possible to be a "true fan" just because you love the team even though you never went to the school?

I'll hang up and listen.

Pretty much.

It's just sad otherwise.

Yes, unless you live close to a Walmart which in that case can solve all your problems

What is the reason you became a fan? That is a better way to gauge a legitimate fan.

I became an Auburn fan because I would listen to games with my grandfather growing up and following Auburn is something we did together. It led me to attend and graduate from Auburn and that is why I am a fan.

I'd say it depends on when you adopt said team. If you became a Bama fan in 2008 I'd say frick you. If your sister/momma had all the games on in the trailer park since you were little. Sure.

Why worry what other people think? Don't be thin-skinned.

Not a requirement, but certainly adds legitimacy.

Basically, you're asking people why they look down on others who didn't graduate/attend the university of whose football team they are a fan. I've always wondered that myself, but it's better to just ask a straightforward question.

Also, ditto on what Ted2010 said.

1) If you graduate from a school, your fandom for that school can not be questioned.
2) If you pull for one school in football (Bama), one school in Basketball (UK) and multiple NFL teams which only includes recent Superbowl champs, NBA Champs, etc. they you are by definition not a "true fan"
3) do you contribute to your schools academic mission? Their Athletic Mission (tshirts from walmart to do not count)

So you can be a fan, but not a TRUE FAN

whole topic is dumb. i don't care if a guy who pulls for my team went to school there with me, before me, after me, or not at all. As long as he isn't a fair weather fan it really doesn't matter to me.

Like another poster in the thread said, to me it's about the reason and timing of you becoming a fan.

I hate the people on this board sometimes. You made mostly good points until you had to throw this little jab in there. It really detracts from your post.

And your final conclusion is BS too.

Arbitrary/vague/not quantifiable definition that is not particularly relevant. All the administrators of the associated learning institutions and the sporting world in general care about is: are we profitable by filling our stadium, receiving donations, selling our ad spots and our memorabilia, etc.

Long before I enrolled at Alabama, my old man took me to Bama games. He enjoyed the road trips to other SEC stadiums.(I did too). He never went to school there and he was as big of a fan as anybody. If our fan bases were limited to only grads, then there would be fewer tv contracts and less choices of games to watch Saturday. Could you imagine tv ratings if it weren't for "sidewalk" fans?

I was an Alabama fan at age 12. At graduation I received a FULL SCHOLARSHIP to another university that was a top school in my major. But to be a true fan I must forfeit $$$$$ in scholarship money and incur massive student loan debt?

Rubbish!

you absolutely can be a true fan without graduating from said school, you're just a lower class of fan.

the side walkers still play a critical role in every program. college football's proletariat, if you will.

I say if you're 18 years or older(out of high school), you have to be a student or a graduate to be a fan of a college team. If you aren't, then you're just another uneducated redneck to me. We don't want people like Harvey Updyke in our fan base.

I think if you're born and raised in Alabama it's natural to be either a big Auburn or Bama fan. Totally understandable. What I don't get, and I had a good rant on the MSB about this when the Cubs won the WS, is the people that were born and raised across the country claiming a team 2000 miles away as their team. It's just weird to me.
