If you didn't graduate, you lose the ability to question the intellectual credentials of a fan or a school.

Like a lot of people have said just depends on the scenario. I know a guy who was a lifelong razorback fan. He and I would discuss the hogs on Monday in the fall back in elementary school because both of our dad's loved the hogs and took us to many games growing up.when we both hit 18 neither of us attended the uofa. I had a full rude to a different university that had the major I desired. He had a d2 football scholarship and still wanted to play the game he loved. We both still love the racorbacks and have been back to many games since starting college. Both of our families even donate to Arkansas so you tell me, are we any less fans just because we didn't attend the school we root for?

If you contribute financially to a school's athletic program then you are a legit fan.

I once had a girlfriend who would wear Auburn gear because she preferred their color scheme, but she wasn't really a fan.

You have already lost if you had to ask this question.

Why do you care so much about what posters think about what makes a true fan?

I think I'd gauge it based on whether you're a fan of a sport or of the school.

If you go for Alabama football and idolize Saban but couldn't be bothered about good/bad things that happen in other sports or the school at large, you're a sports fan. It's fine, it's just different.

If you are an Alabama football fan, and you also take an interest (however you want to define that - staying up to date, donating, etc.) in advancements the school is making, in whether or not the girl's golf team is accomplishing something, in how Tuscaloosa's revitalization is bolstering Alabama's rise, whatever...you're what I might deem an "Alabama person." It's not just about wins and losses for you. You probably like following what happens to Alabama players/grads in their lives outside of sports and you're probably more than likely an alum, family of alums, or you have some other more meaningful connection to the school.

Being a fan is fine...but trying to elevate yourself over other fans is something a nerd who didn't make team would do.

Cheer for whoever makes you happy and lay off the judgement unless you actually took a snap for the team you cheer for.

No, but it adds legitimacy. If you're dad tried to play for the bear and raised you on the tide, you can be a Bama fan.

If you became a fan when Saban was hired, go frick yourself.

If you are a fan of the Warriors, Patriots, and Red Sox, go frick yourself.

If you attend/attended another school with a football team and are still a Bama fan, go frick yourself.

If you attend Bama, then congrats on being one of the 15 percent.

Considering the majority of Bama fans have never set foot inside a college classroom, let alone Alabama... You are in good company with your fanbase.

Or there is choice "C": don't give two flying flips about what other anonymous people think about your ability to root for a team. I fall in that category

here's the thing. There are 2474 four-year universities in this country. There are 128 FBS football teams. That leaves students from 2346 universities that have the option of either 1) not being "allowed" to be a fan; or 2) being called a sidewalk fan

It's stupid. The majority of people become a fan of a football team when they are children. Some end up going to school at that college, some don't. It shouldn't make them any less a fan of a school they rooted for growing up because they chose to go to school somewhere else or, for whatever reason, were unable to attend college altogether. We're talking about sports teams here, not some random guy pimping the science department of a random college that he didn't go to. I view college fans not a whole lot differently than professional fans. Then I differentiate those between actual fans and bandwagon fans. HTH

ETA: Not to mention, college football wouldn't be what it is and wouldn't generate the money it does without "sidewalk fans"

If you grew up in Alabama as a fan of AU or UA (especially if you have family ties) is a strong fandom and is more than adequate.

I know people who grew up a AU or UA fan but ended up attending the rival school and their fandom from their childhood was so strong they still couldn't bring themselves to switch sides.

Think about it like this. Would you rather talk about your favorite team with a guy who works a blue collar job but has kept up with the team closely since he was elementary school age along with all the other major sports at the school, or a douche bag who grew up in suburban Atlanta with Yankee parents and he went to your school but was so busy getting drunk with his frat get flunked out in two years and games are just something to be social and drink with friends.

Maybe I'm just in the minority but I didn't get into the school I rooted for as a kid but became a fan of the school I attended. It seems like people don't switch in that scenario very often. Find it strange but to each their own. Doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

What if you moved to the town the university is in? I'd justify switching then just for convenience sake.

I have a friend who is a huge Miami fan. Probably because his dad played football there. His dad lives in Atlanta and is a huge GT fan.

For the sake of argument, let's say you grew up a die-hard Arkansas fan. Then, when it came time to go to college, you chose to go to Rice because they offered you a scholarship package that was just too good to pass up and Rice just being a great college in general, much better for your future, etc. Would you stop rooting for Arkansas? Would you become a die-hard Rice football fan?
