For the sake of argument, let's say you grew up a die-hard Arkansas fan. Then, when it came time to go to college, you chose to go to Rice because they offered you a scholarship package that was just too good to pass up. Would you stop rooting for Arkansas? Would you become a die-hard Rice football fan?

No, and I completely understand that. My situation is different than many because both schools I rooted for/attended were big and p5 programs.

That being said I have seen some posters mention they grew up rooting for one SEC school but ended up attending another SEC school. It seems like the majority in this situation continue to root for the team they grew up rooting. Not saying there is something wrong with that, just something I wouldn't do.

I obviously still hope the team I rooted for as a kid does well but would never root for them if it hurt Arkansas.

You should at least have some sort of attachment to the team. Someone just picking Alabama or whatever team that has no relation whatsoever except they picked a team are "true fans" IMO

Now people that graduated from said school are IMO more entitled to their fandom

I have a relative that does that. Born and raised in Alabama but her dad was an LSU fan. She stayed in state for college and went to UA. She cheers for them but also for LSU.

What is the reason you became a fan? That is a better way to gauge a legitimate fan.

This right here is how you do it.

Did an immediate family member attend said University?
Did you attend?
Did a relative play a sport there?
Did you support a student in some way?

If not, then what is the reason you follow that University's athletics?
What do you get out of dick riding a bunch of college kids that you have no connection to?

and there are plenty of people like that. One of my buddies is a die hard Memphis Tigers fan (yes they exist ). Well, if you weren't aware, Memphis is an awful school today. However, his entire family went there back in the day. He went to UT for undergrad but remained a die-hard Memphis fan and actually never rooted for the Vols.

I think it really comes down to how big a fan you were growing up. If you grew up rooting for a specific team, and I mean really rooting for them, not just casually being a fan, and had an abundance of ties to the school. But then, when it came time to go to college, you went elsewhere, i can see how it would be difficult really being a true fan of another team. And I use the term "team" and not "school" because that is what you root for growing up. I can also see how it would not feel right ever rooting against the team you grew up rooting for, regardless of anything.

My father graduated from Memphis back when it was Memphis State. He still roots for them but there hasn't been a ton to root for in their history except for a few years a good basketball. My sister went to UT so he is a hybird Arkansas/Memphis/Tennessee fan

yeah I grew up in Memphis. Have quite a few friends that are hybrid fans of Memphis State and wherever they ended up for college. The most obnoxious fans on earth were the bandwagon Memphis State, basketball only, fans. They loved them some Anfernee Haradway but probably couldn't name any player on the roster or the HC of the football team.

You can put me in this category. Vanderbilt has slightly higher academic admission requirements and tuition costs than the other SEC schools. I admittedly did not even apply because $40K a year just didn't make much sense to me. Auburn gave me a pretty nice scholarship package, and I honestly fell in love with the place when I visited (as a last minute, out-of-the-blue addition to a trip to visit a bunch of schools). Damn it though, growing up as a Vandy fan has this Stockholm Syndrome effect, and I just could not let it go. I still root for Vandy over Auburn, but I do love Auburn and its athletics.

Other sidewalk fans like myself don't bother me. I roll my eyes at bandwagon fans, but they're whatever. The ones that really make me laugh are people who think their favorite team's success somehow validates them as a human being. Most of the time, those people not only did not attend that school but did not have the academics to get into a typical state-funded institution. Those people are really amusing.

There's no requirement. With that being said I'm suspicious of anybody who began rooting for Bama in 2008 or 2009.

Memphis gets a lot of shite and I understand why but it believe that part of the city is growing and developing nicely. It seems like there is always something new they are showing us.

I say if you're 18 years or older(out of high school), you have to be a student or a graduate to be a fan of a college team. If you aren't, then you're just another uneducated redneck to me. We don't want people like Harvey Updyke in our fan base.

Which is why Missouri never had a full stadium, doesn't have a large stadium, and doesn't have a large fanbase.
