Tennessee pays well, rabid fanbase and great facilities so I wouldn’t say it’s a bad job, but if you are a good enough coach to be offered a top 15 job you have to wonder if there’s others that do NOT have:
1. An AD that’s willing to strong arm.

2. A fanbase that still thinks it’s a blue blood when in reality at this point it’s upper middle class (like Nebraska) as these high expectations are what will lead to your early termination.

3. Have a track record of playing Lil John on 3rd down.

No

But Tennessee will have to clean house and not hire one of those

God I hope he works out

coaches. You have to get a guy that has a championship on his resume.

The state of Tennessee has as much high school talent as Alabama and will be clearly ahead in 10 years.

The people in charge at Tenn, whomever they are, have screwed this thing up so it will take the right coach and a fanbase that has patience to get things right again. In their peak back 20+ years ago they recruited Georgia better than UGA recruited Georgia and they got top guys from NC, SC, Ohio and just about everywhere. They can't do that anymore. There is still not enough HS talent in Tenn but they have everything else, fans that care, facilities, etc.

Meh, Auburn gets Bama, Georgia, and LSU every year and has yet to sink to Tennessee level of apathy.

Now if AU hires Kevin fricking Steele we will join them shortly.

It's a blue blood program with plenty of potential under the right coach.

Coaches will be lining up this go around.

Well, they pay well, but their heyday has passed. When UT was a winning program, before the modern era, they were getting players from GA, NC, SC, FL, etc. Now they’re having a hard time keeping TN players home and, when they do, they tend to flop (see Cade Mays).

You only have to see how many HCs they’ve had since Fulmer to answer your question.

I don't mean to be jerky but it's no longer a blue blood program and never will be again. Nebraska fans have been saying the same thing for 20 years and their program will never be back.

The problems are with recruiting. There are only a couple good players each year in Tennessee and other schools swoop in to get them.

Jamal Lewis, Eric Berry, Deon Grant, Peyton Manning, Tee Martin, Peerless Price, Travis Henry and Leonard Little were all from out of state. Not only was Fullmer getting the 2-3 good players each year in the state of Tennessee but he was getting kids from all over the south to come to Tennessee.

I just don't see that happening again.

It's not a bad job in that it will pay plenty of money, and the facilities are some of the best in the country. But it's not a good job in that they're are much better jobs both in the conference and in close geographic proximity.

Recruiting isn't the issue. They finished 2020 with the 10th ranked recruiting rank in the country per 247.

2019 they were 13th.

It's a leadership/coaching problem.

Any job in the SEC is a challenging job. Expectations are high, the competition is brutal, for the most part. It's a big boy job with no time to coast if you want to be successful.

I think Tenn. recruiting is getting better every year with the Nashville boom. Memphis is on the opposite edge but still in state. Also neighbors MS, AL, GA, which all have talent. .

They are a great coach away from making all things possible. These elite recruits are making "business decisions" not so much "there's no place like home" on signing day.

Clemson is in South Carolina, let that set in for just a moment. Clemson would still be "clemsoning" if not for Dabo Sweeny, period.

Well, also the ACC is historically bad right now. If Clemson was in the SEC, they'd lose 2-3 games a year.

Not a ton of talent...but Tennessee has a top 5 recruiting budget, because they have always had to recruit out of state.

This is a big thing. Playing Bama every year is an automatic, demoralizing L. Sucks for UT fans.

Some of those rosters in the late 90’s had players from just about everywhere except Tennessee.

I wanna say at one point in the late 90’s they had players from 17 different states.
