From such a great program in the 90s they have fallen so far. Every coach there seems to fail. Does Tennessee not have much of a recruiting base in the state?

They typically don’t have the recruiting base that states like Alabama, Georgia, Florida, etc. have - and they’re faced with trying to fend off the talent they do have from Saban, Dabo, Kirby, Mullen, etc. It’s a challenge, and it will take an elite recruiter to bring them long term relevance again.

It's still a SEC job, so it's "good". Just not elite relatively speaking.

One good sign for the future is that it appears high school football in Tennessee has improved over the last several years or so. There are more prospects than previous generations due to the influx of population in the state.

Just takes the right coach, but it's a tougher job than it was 20 years ago, no doubt.

Tennessee has plenty of recruits. They just aren't coming to Tennessee. Clemson has had success recruiting Tennessee the past 6-7 years, and Alabama had some Tennessee guys when they were turning it around as well. Ohio State has recruited plenty of Tennessee guys. If Tennessee could get 5-6 of the top 10 TN recruits, recruit GA, NC, and VA, thats good enough to have an SEC quality roster.

But to answer your question. Yes, it is a bad job, as bad as Ole Miss, Arkansas, Mizzou, South Carolina. Better history and facilities than those schools but way more pressure, way more administrative dysfunction. But the players are there and recruiting isn't the issue, at least recruiting isn't why we're getting beat by the likes of Kentucky and Arkansas.

Tennessee is a dead program.

Gonna take a while before they're relevant again.

This is the reason quality coaches avoid certain schools that seem to be “Great” jobs. Alabama had a run of it. Tennessee, Auburn, Texas seem to be the ones now that suffer from it. To get out of it you have to clean house.

That’s what Moore did with Saban. First meeting Saban had with the big money REC he basically told them he appreciates everything they do but if any of you SOBs think I need help recruiting a player either you’re gone, or I’m gone. That’s the reason behind the no buyout.

Outside of a few select jobs with programs who are the #1 school in talent rich states (USC, Texas, Ohio State, Florida, Georgia, LSU), a job is as good as their coach nowadays.

Bad job? No.

It's not a top 10 job or anything but it's a program that with a good recruiter can still go get players from the states of NC, SC, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and field a very good team. Plus it pays very well.
