List some teams you believe could've won the natty that didn't get the opportunity to.
As a Tennessee fan I feel like Peyton would have won at least 1 during his junior or senior season.
Auburn and some other teams got hosed by not making the title game and I am sure there are others..
Lets keep the list starting in 1990 - if there was a playoff system do you believe there would be some different champions other than who the polls/BCS crowned?

A&M in 1994 would have been in the playoffs, if NIL was legal too

Based on what? Losing to Memphis? Getting housed by Florida or Nebraska?

Not saying LSU would have beaten Florida in a 2006 rematch, but the first one had a couple of questionable calls in The Swamp, and the Tigers were hot to finish.

Boise State would have spoiled a few parties in the playoffs.

That is why there is a playoff. 11-1 SEC champs didn't care about a bowl game. Tennessee may have won in 2001 as well

2020 Texas A&M (Covid year)
I don’t know that we “could’ve won” but I still think it’s bullshite Ohio State got in and we didn’t when they played fewer games.

In 1997, teams cared about a major bowl regardless of title implications. That’s why a guy like Manning started despite having his draft status pretty much locked.

1999 was the last great Nebraska team would have been fun to see em play FSU
2000 sure would have been nice to see Miami play Oklahoma instead of FSU
2001 Miami wins same as 1994-95 Nebraska
2002 Miami should have won by Willis McGahee's injury f'd em but UGA probably makes noise
2003 this would have been the year that USC/LSU/OU actually got settled on the field
2004 USC wins but at least they get to play Auburn
2005 Texas wins
2006 Florida probably wins but the LSU rematch would have been fun
2007 probably comes down to UGA/LSU winner
2008 pretty sure Florida wins but getting Texas in the mix would have been nice
2009 Alabama wins
2010 Auburn wins but it would have been nice seeing them beat TCU up
2011 Pretty sure Alabama wins but at least Oklahoma State would have gotten to play for it instead of choking on applesauce
2012 Would have been nice to see Alabama play any team not named Notre Dame they probably still beat Oregon and Ohio State was on probation
2013 Probably still FSU given Alabama lost to Aub & Oklahoma and I don't see Michigan State winning
TL;DR it doesn't really change the BCS calculus much but sure would have been a massive impact prior.

Yes in 1997 teams did care about bowls. However the Orange Bowl in 1997 meant nothing to Tennessee. We couldnt win the Natty and Peyton had just lost the Heisman. That team didnt have any interest in playing in that bowl game.

2012 and 2013 South Carolina. Both would have gotten into a 12-team playoff, and been very dangerous.

AU would have won 93, 04 and 06. That Cox team was Tubs best, but LSU injured him.

2006 LSU > 2007 LSU and in my opinion it isn't really close. I think it was the best overall team of the Les Miles era. Questionable things happened at the Swamp and the JHV bit them. 4 first rounders.

I'd like to say that several Mark Richt teams would have, but then again, they never got it done under the system in place at the time.

Depending on how long between the end of the season and the start of the playoffs, 2010 Alabama could have gotten healthy again (except for Barron). That team that murdered Michigan State was hitting on all cylinders.
