I bet he would have some success had he remained on the plains all this time. Maybe just now he probably would have started to recede. He would have had one more Auburn team that would have been in the mix IMO. probably would have beaten bama a couple more times maybe even the dawgs. Where does the Gus firing rank amongst the sec’s worst firings? Vols were a door mat for a long time after fulmer was canned.

He was 6-4 when fired. While not terrible it was pretty clear he was not cutting it so can't blame Auburn.

2 things can be true at once:
He wasn't getting it done.
They have only hired worse coaches since

I've never understood this thought process that a firing was bad just because the subsequent hires were failures.

The worst thing about moving on from Gus is we had no idea what we were supposed to do next.

Malzahn's problem is that the sport had caught on to how his offense worked... and he wasn't willing to change. The trend would have continued I'm afraid.
Some coaches reach their sell by date. No matter how good they are time takes its toll.

Gus Malzahn was 0-15 against LSU, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, and alabama outside of Jordan-Hare stadium.
Want to know how many bowl wins he had at Auburn? Two - Birmingham bowl against Memphis and the Music City bowl against Purdue.
That’s why he was fired. He couldn’t win a big road game. It’s almost unfathomable to have a road record that bad. He was kept around way too long.

Best coach Auburn could possibly get. Let’s reset. Such an offensive genius he went from HS to the SEC. He did very well at Auburn.
But as Saban gained more traction with locking down the state with his “generous ahem resources” that made him quit NIL, Malzhan was left playing by the rules in some farm town (not like Tuscaloosa is much better but gumps worship it).
Now look at Auburn. If there’s ever a merger between conferences I do worry Auburn could be left out now.

You must've not followed our recruiting closely towards the end of Gus.
We were lucky to get 2* Olinemen...

Auburn has not had more than 6 wins in a season since they fired him.
Maybe that is the curse. Because they fired Gus for only winning 6 games, they will never win more than 6 games in a season every again. That seems reasonable.
