We learned our retread lesson on Ron Polk… hopefully.
Lots of sour taste from him. Not because he left…. But because he was so open about looking for other programs from 2011 through 2017 that recruiting suffered because no one knew if he would be there or not.

Mississippi State is probably the second worst job behind Vandy in the SEC right now.
They better hit a home run with their next hire and build their NIL or they better move to the Big 12. They ain’t competing with a mediocre new coach and a bunch of 3 stars.

Can State really give a guy less than a year after his predecessor died unexpectedly? I guess so, but that's a tough situation. I think they'd likely give him one more year, but it is probable that Arnett is a bridge hire.

idk ifni take that job if I am Leipold or Elko
on one hand, we’ve seen guys lose their shot hanging around a shitty program long enough for it to drag them down. Matt Campbell at Iowa State for example.
Miss State isn’t a full on black hole.
guys have used it as a stepping stone

shite yea we can. If he gets the whole year it’s a travesty. I had a slim hope MSU would have cut ties today.
It would be different if Leach said “it’s been great but I’m retiring to the keys to play in the sun.” And retired. Then we had a search and then hired Arnett.
Didn’t happen. Circumstances thrust him to the top spot. No search. All necessity.

Chadwell would be a nice fit, his offense just kills it with less talent and no big factory school is ever likely to hire him away because of the perceived stink of option football thats associated with him. I wonder what his buyout is at Liberty?

i wont do a deep dive, but just off the cuff, willie fritz (#75 '22 composite recruiter), Mike Elko (#64 '22 composite recruiter), Ryan Silverfield (#68 '22 composite recruiter) would be a basic start...plus Liopold obviously knows what he is doing. I know these guys have different backgrounds, but the fact they have their teams playing at higher levels is a good indicator. im not advocating anyone in particular, but my premise is find a guy that is leading a team playing better than they should and go from there. not taking into account culture, fit, etc.
i think a pull from memphis or tulane would be great hires.

State's in a tough spot, no doubt. Not sure what the buyout is, but this might be a good year to hire a coach. We don't have many openings.
Obviously, Michigan State is looking for a coach. Michigan might be before it's all over. If Florida loses out, they might fire Napier; the win over the Gators by Arkansas probably saved Sam Pittman's job. $75 million price tag probably means Jimbo hangs around College Station another season.
Outside of those possibilities, State would likely be going up against Power 5 teams they can outcompete, like Syracuse, Indiana, Baylor, etc. South Carolina might pull the plug on Shane Beamer after 3 seasons, I guess.
An interesting candidate: Jerry Kill. He's a good coach who's won at different levels in places where it's pretty hard to win. I could see him nabbing one of these open jobs after the season.

My first call would be Curt Cignetti at James Madison. Yeah he’s 62 but the guy is a freaking winner. His record as a head coach, albeit at lower levels, is remarkable. And he’s made JMU a big winner immediately upon jumping up to FBS. Also helped rebuild Bama in the early Saban years and was Phillip Rivers’ QB coach at NC State.
I am fine with Herman but obviously there are some concerns with how it never really took off at Texas. Maybe it was him, maybe it was a Texas thing, probably some of both. But I could see him going to State and doing well.
Chadwell I think waits it out a little while longer to try for a bigger job than State. Just a hunch. I don’t think his contract situation is as friendly for prospective employers as some other names in the mix.
Long shot sitting Power 5 coach kind of hire, but Dave Clawson at Wake Forest might be a name of interest given our new AD’s ties to Wake.
I would start with that group and make those guys tell you no before moving on to anyone else.

If State is having issues with raising money for NIL, how can they come up with $7 Million for a coach? Not being ugly, asking a legit question.

NIL comes from the fans. The university can't contribute.
State can pay a coach $7 million. Will they?
Leach was making $5.5 MM when he died. Arnett is at $3 MM with a low buyout.
NIL is a huge issue at State right now. Our fanbase is not keeping up with the rest of the SEC. The big money donors want to fund baseball. Its tough.

Buyout is no big deal. It’s less than 5 mil. That is not a concern at all.

Thanks for the clarifications. I do understand how the NIL works, but ultimately, any pay raise for coaches comes from the same pool of folks, just sent to different entities. I am certainly not suggesting State won't pony up for their new coach if that happens. I'm just curious if the base will pony up to finance a coach that is going to require NIL funding...
