NIL is a huge issue at State right now. Our fanbase is not keeping up with the rest of the SEC. The big money donors want to fund baseball. Its tough.
Apathy is the reason.
It’s just been one gut punch after another. That makes it hard to commit more money. That’s again one of the reasons this new hire needs to spark some interest.
I’m again assuming the leadership is not so incompetent as to allow another year.
Doesn’t make it any easier with the current AD being absolutely silent. I haven’t heard a single thing outside of Starkville from the guy since he was hired.

Long shot sitting Power 5 coach kind of hire, but Dave Clawson at Wake Forest might be a name of interest given our new AD’s ties to Wake.
Wouldn’t be a terrible hire. His record shows he has built solid programs at all his jobs.
Would probably get us Mullen level results. 6-8 wins with occasional 10 win season

one of our biggest issues with NIL was John Cohen. He did very little to get us started. we are now scrambling just to get out of the early organizational stages of that. we are behind, but we will learn quickly (hopefully). its time for Selmon to step up or get out and show some leadership.

Cohen was a big problem for State with NIL, but Leach also didn’t really help things, as much as I hate to say it. When you need to raise money for NIL, your AD and your head football coach bad mouthing it at every speaking engagement isn’t gonna convince your fans to contribute.

They weren't paying Leach that much.

I say you give him another year or three.

Lance Leipold and Mike Elko should be your top targets!

It's too big of a step up, that's the problem. It's a more difficult job.

MSU could potentially be scary if they got Elko.
Moo St couldn't be scary even if they got Vince Lombardi and Bear Bryant's love-child.

Clawson is just a really solid fb coach, and is great at finding hidden gem lower ranked recruits and getting the most out of them. His slow-mesh offense is funky but with a good QB it just works and is designed to overcome talent deficiencies on the OL.

His last team at Bowling Green was dang good, came to Starkville and only lost by 1 to a Dak-led State team. I think Bowling Green ended up winning 10 or 11 games and the MAC title that year.
Wake has struggled this year but he’s had some good teams. The Mullen comparison is spot on, he has lived in that 6 to 8 win range. I don’t know that he’d be my first choice just because I think he’s a high floor/low ceiling hire and State does need someone to raise their ceiling a little, but I think he’d be an acceptable option.

Ole Miss acting like their football program is superior to ours is hilarious.. since 1990 (Sherill era) we are 16-14 against ya'll with an actual West title and trip to the SECG and 13 straight bowl games. I would say our program is attractive..

This is the problem. The whole world of college football has changed post covid. Viewing anything the same way you did pre covid will result in bad results.
NIL and the transfer portal have changed everything.

Kinda like claiming Titles before integration?

2018 and 1962 are about the same in relevance to post covid college football.
Conference look different, playoffs look different, the way you acquire and keep talent is different.
You can keep acting like it is not, but Ole Miss and Missouri have been trending up since covid because they have a grasp on the new landscape. A lot of teams are trending down because they are scared of change or don't want to admit it is happening.

Our program IS superior to yours.
Kiffin and staff are light years ahead of state’s current staff or anybody you could actually afford to bring in.
We’re out recruiting state head to head for the top Mississippi guys. And we significantly out recruit you in the transfer portal. We have one of the best NIL collectives in the country. State’s NIL is non existent (poors)
We’re on track to win 10 games for the second time in three years (state has only done this three times in program history) and Kiffin is on track to win 3 outta 4 egg bowls. We’ve been ranked in the top 10 three years in row.
Ole Miss is a better program than state by every measurable metric and the gap is getting wider. No one gives a frick what state did with Jackie Sherrill and Dan Mullen in 2023.

Y’all have an 8 win season that got you a divisional title a quarter century ago. Do you think anyone outside of Mississippi State really cares about that season?
Our NIL game is actually WAY better than y’all’s and it’s a big reason you’re starting to see more separation between the programs than we have in our lifetimes. State has to get that figured out quick with a new coach or it’s going to get much worse.
We are likely going to be playing in our 4th New Years Six bowl game in the last 9 years this season. I’m not saying State has a shite program but to act like y’all are level with us at the moment is just willful ignorance.
Having Kiffin has helped tremendously but he’s far from the only reason we have a better program than y’all right now

Name one program in the newly expanded SEC that State is currently better than (other than Vandy)
The Jackie Sherrill and Dan Mullen years are the golden era of Mississippi state football. And they’re about to revert back to mean of being a sub .500 program.

If there’s anything I’ve learned in my life, it’s that something will happen soon that will be catastrophic to our program or they will have something happen that greatly elevates theirs. We are cursed to be at the hip with each other. Neither will ever get too far ahead of the other.

Since Covid things have changed. It is like we broke some curse by hiring Lane. Baseball won a natty. Football is as good as it has been in 60 years. Basketball has a top 10 coach. These are uncharted waters as an athletics department.
