How is the SEC not a huge loser in this round of TV deals?

The big ten is going to be on 3/4 networks plus their streaming partners.

The SEC will only be on ESPN/ABC. On top of that they seem to be far higher in terms of their annual payout than we will get. The worst part of this is being totally beholden to Disney. Sankey will fold like a cheap suit to whatever Disney wants us to do.

We may still hold a competitive edge, but as far as being a fan, it sucks that we’re going to be stuck only on ESPN for the next few decades.

Time will tell

Did you ever see "Charlie Wilson's War"?

Great comment by Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character in that movie applies here

ESPN is where sports fans go for Saturday coverage. It's still a great deal. What's bad about it is the length of the term.

It's not all one way. Disney needs us too. If the SEC does something different, that means ESPN has no SEC and no Big Ten. Sankey has plenty of leverage.

I do think that splitting the deal makes sense, and that the B1G has done quite nicely.

All this tells me is that SEC is gonna be rich as frick when the media rights are renegotiated upon Texas / OU entry.

You could say CBS and the other networks are the huge losers. Over paying for a subpar product outside of the Ohio St/Michigan game.

Care to share it for those of us who only saw it once in theaters years ago?

ETA: NVM, I assume your referencing this:
quote:

Gust Avrakotos : There's a little boy and on his 14th birthday he gets a horse... and everybody in the village says, "how wonderful. The boy got a horse" And the Zen master says, "we'll see." Two years later, the boy falls off the horse, breaks his leg, and everyone in the village says, "How terrible." And the Zen master says, "We'll see." Then, a war breaks out and all the young men have to go off and fight... except the boy can't cause his legs all messed up. and everybody in the village says, "How wonderful."

Charlie Wilson : Now the Zen master says, "We'll see."

The SEC loses as far as production value. CBS and NBC produce a much better game product than ESPN. It feels like a big game. ESPN’s game production, camera angles, etc., sucks.

I agree with the OP. Sankey is way over his head.

The question will be how many SEC games are on ABC. If we’re largely relegated to cable and streaming, it’s not great. Exposure is everything.

College football is going to be completely upended over the next ten years. Many of these tv/$ details will change long before the contracts play out.

Pirate, what century are you living in? Over-the-air networks are reaching their ends.

I agree with this. The Big 10’s TV contract is with three non-cable channels.

I would be worried if I was an SEC fan. Betting the league's future on ESPN was not a smart move and has catastrophe written all over it. I don't understand why the school presidents don't step in and take over. Kristina Johnson would not stand for it.

This is what I keep coming back to. The SEC has a superior product. The market will adjust accordingly.

You realize streaming just passed cable television in viewership for the first time in history correct?

SEC has the better product. It will become even more obvious as time goes on.

The Big Ten will be making money, as the SEC continues to win NC after NC. However even though the Big Ten will not be making up the chasm of titles, the SEC will be making up the chasm of the money difference.
