This was posted on the Auburn board & you would all be well served in reading these stats about EJ before you speak about why AU cannot have a good defense under GM. I don't know why some are bringing up GM while he was coaching under Gene Chizik. Doing so only proves you are just trying to reach for anything to trash the guy about. He didn't make decisions then and had nothing to do with the team other than to coach the offense. EJ is the definition of a mediocre coach. I had no idea his resume was just plain not that great. He had one good defense at South Carolina. The rest were below average in the SEC. Like others have said we don't need a top tier defense. We only need one to make a few stops in games. We didn't get that this season in the games that matter. Good offenses slaughtered us. Ted Roof left us & is at Ga Tech. I beg you all to sit here & tell me that guy is a great DC. He has an offense that plays ground control. Their defense is not on the field because the very nature of the offense is to score in a slow methodical fashion this keeping them off the field. The ACC outside of Tech was abysmal this year. I cannot say that because Ted Roof is doing "good" at Tech therefore Auburn was the problem. Comparing Auburn in the SECw and the ACC is comparing apples & oranges.

Do you know or have you ever heard of a scout team?

I believe he addressed that in two of his posts. Do you have more info to dispute or add to what he says. Out of all the posts his was the most thought out and common sense post in the thread.

btw Not saying he is absolutely correct, but I sure think it is plausible.

Meh, you certainly leave your defense out to dry a little bit. They don't get as much rest.

3-8 in the Red Zone. Pretty shitty %. And we gave you three first half TO's. We could have had 28-35 points in the first half...you got your shite pushed in.

We're talking about your vaunted defense who gave up 44 points to Auburn and it could have been worse.

Late to the party but here is my take. I'm not saying Pertrino is or isn't the offensive coach Gus is, but we faced similar problems when Petrino was at AR. It was my opinion then, and still is, that a top notch DC doesn't want to coach for teams that run HUNH or fast paced offenses.

When was the last time a team had a fast paced offense and solid defense? I can't think of any examples.

Take the AR-Mizzou game last week. Our defense was solid for 3 quarters. However, our offense couldn't stay on the field and we got killed late in the game. If you watched the game you could tell our defense was completely spent.

What kills the HUNH teams is when they quickly score a FG or go 3 and out. Then a team a team that marches down the field slowly scores a TD while eating 7:00 off the clock. This happened to us alot with Petrino.

That's not to take anything away from the HUNH teams, they've had success. But defense wins championships and that still seems to be the case.

After seven pages of faux outrage and obsession this melt that, not one auburn poster has even addressed the basic premise of the discussion. Sounds about right.

Auburn won the NC in 2010 with a great offense/mediocre defense and was 13 seconds away from winning another one with a great offense and terrible defense.

13 seconds away.... you were fortunate to even be there..and that is being nice.

Are all au fans either walking t shirt slogans or fake victims, or are you allowed to be both? Serious question.

Gus has outcoached him now two years in a row. This year's game shouldn't have even been close.

If you check my post history, I'm a big Gus supporter. BUT...

Gus fricked this game up a couple of ways. One of the drives in the first half AU is running all over the Bama defense and get down to the red zone. What happens? Gus channels his inner Nussmeier and throws it three times in a row and has to settle for three.

Then, the horrendous clock mismanagement at the end of the half that resulted in another FG. Les Miles was sitting at home saying, "Holy shite, that was stupid."

Ok, I'll do it for you. Based on the years Gus has been at Auburn, it looks like our scoring defense only needs to be ~45 to win consistently. In the down years, it's been around 70. For the 1000th time, no one is expecting an elite defense, just a serviceable one. That is not impossible to achieve.

Here's a link for you to look everything up yourself.

Do the numbers 44 and 628 mean anything to you? When was the last time Bama gave up more points and yards than that while playing at home? I'll hang up and listen.

maybe, but one basic premise made has been correct throughout football- if you run a wide-open offense, your defense will suffer.

That's not limited to Auburn, or A&M. You see it throughout college, and when teams in the pros ran the Run-n-Shoot, you saw it there too. You see it now with the Saints and Green Bay.

Too many defensive possessions. Your scheme gets exposed, and the other team gets into a rhythm.

Trying to claim Gus out coached Nick in this year's IB is laughable. After halftime, Bama's defense adjusted and severely slowed down the Gus attack until a garbage time touchdown.

The red zone play calling and clock frick ups alone should have the AU fans livid. But to try to flame the board with some joke of a claim that "Gus out coached Nick" when he just got his doors blown off makes the trolley look bad. Really bad.
