I have no idea how real the possibility of him coming really was. Let's assume he really was (unproven). I'm pretty sure the real reason it never happened was because of mack's bitch arse.
Red McCombs (I may have the booster wrong but pretty sure it was Red) said in an interview that when he mentioned to Mack about Nick coming (Mack was still the coach but had one foot out the door) Mack threw a fit and said something to the effect of "I don't want him coming here and winning a title with MY players."
we'll never know the true story behind what happened. I've never been convinced he was coming but I do believe the story of Mack melting down over the idea.

It would have been wild to fire Miles after the 2006 season when LSU went 11-2 (both losses to top 10 teams), finished #3 and demolished Notre Dame in their bowl - and that was after a top 5 finish in 2005 and an SEC West title and SECCG berth (and destroying top 10 Miami in their bowl game).

I dont see an opening in 07 that would have caught his attention enough to leave Miami (NFL). If he waited a year then both Tennessee and Auburn would have been open, as well as Clemson.

Hard to say in these hypothetical scenarios. All three being open were at least in some part because of him being at Alabama.

We all know the **rumored** talks between Saban and Texas in 2013, Saban probably goes there without Alabama in the mix
Someone in this thread mentioned Miami, I can see it, Saban got a lot of his LSU out of state talent from the Miami area, would've been better than Randy Shannon

All the noise and leaks coming out regarding that was absolutely real, gotta give Jimmy Sexton credit though, leveraged it to get Nick a king's ransom extension to stay

I have a fairly neutral opinion of Mack—I don't know maybe slightly negative, although I'm not entirely sure why. Overall, though, I would say I'm pretty neutral.
That said, it's hard for me to believe this quote or anything along these lines is true. Even if he genuinely felt that way, what kind of man would admit it to another man? This is the kind of sentiment a man just has to burry

Saban was not a terrible NFL coach at all and likely sticks around with the Dolphins for another year or two.

On the one hand, yes. On the other, that was the single most talented LSU team I've ever seen outside of the 2019 team. He had Saban to thank for much of that talent. They had no business losing a single game, but he and Jimbo still found a way to frick it up.

I agree it is hilarious that SouthernInsanity posted that the Miami Dolphins fired Saban. I laughed too! It was funny because he thought it was a gotcha. And it was, just not the way he envisioned.

Wasn't he pissed that they didn't pull the trigger on Drew? Seems that I recall when the Dolphins wouldn't clear him medically that Saban was ready to walk away just from watching interviews.
Lord that time was such a roller coaster ride as a Bama fan. We run off Shula and then offer Rich Rod. I thought that was a done deal until he backs out like hours after accepting and then we are in the Twilight Zone till after the holidays. Joe Kines coaches the bowl game which was almost comical given yelling his how he communicates. The only thing that even compares is when Mike Price gets fired for using a university credit card at a strip club and then that abyss. I often wish I could have just been a Saban era bandwagon fan.
