Gus Malzahn’s No. 1 goal this upcoming season is to field a top-10 defense. Yes, you heard that correctly. “It’s not offense. It’s not ‘this or that.’ It’s for us to play top 10 defense,” Malzahn said this spring, according to Auburns official website.

To give you an idea of how daunting a task this will be, here’s Auburn’s national ranking in total defense over the last six seasons:

2015 — 71st
2014 — 66th
2013 — 87th
2012 — 81st
2011 — 80th
2010 — 60th

Gonna be an interesting year on the plains, if Steele can pull a Top 30 "D" he's gonna get a big raise...

Clemson, aTm, LSU, Ark, Ole Miss, UGA & Bama on the schedule...

This is like Les telling everyone that he expects a top 10 offense.

I don't think it's sunk in yet how terrible Auburn is going to be this year

Until November we had a very highly ranked offense in both yards and efficiency. Harris got hurt against Bama and shite fell apart. So yea

Well, he's saying all the right things. This is what his fans want to hear.

He's got a battle on his hands this season but "if" they can finally field a top 10 defense, then I think they'll win 9+ games.

What does any of this have to do with what I said?

I am one of those that didn't hate Steele as much as most of our fanbase. I didn't think we were that talented for starters; we were putting in a new system; and Peveto's special teams started everyone at the fricking 50.

However, the bud in Hootie and Cam's car is probably Gus' if he thinks Steele is going to make them a top 10 defense

#1 this is from May 5th
#2 I get it - Kevin Steele, poor recent defenses and all, but what the hell do you expect him to say there*?

yeah because y'all could out physical everyone up to that point. once you played teams that could match up to y'all in the trenches y'all's offense became stagnant.

but yeah if Harris had stayed healthy (I don't even remember hearing that he was injured but I'll take your word for it) y'all's offense wouldve continued putting up the same number of points

Everyone, including Gus, knows we're not in line for a top 10 defense but you don't tell a group of boosters that to their face at a function they've gathered for you

Arkansas was the better team in November, but Harris did injure himself against the Alabama. Harris out of the option was really effective prior and gave teams a lot more to think about

They return very little of their defensive output from last year, but maybe that is a good thing because they were an abomination.

They also severely downgraded their DC to a laughing stock.

Soooo lose a ton of experience and downgrade DC and expect top 10 D?

I highly doubt he can get to Top 10 caliber. We shall see.

I do think Auburn's defense will be much improved if Lawson can stay healthy. Also, if Auburn becomes a more run-oriented offense, then those defensive statistics should improve quite a bit. Heck, if I were an Auburn fan, I'd be pleased if he could just get Auburn into the Top 50. That would be quite an improvement all by itself.

Why do people always ask that question, and then go all hyperbole?

Maybe not create an expectation to start with. Talk about improvement. Booster club or not, that stuff comes back on bite when you don't follow through.
