Hamilton's was fantastic. It's been several years since our child graduated and I still miss going there every time we visited. Acre had just opened so we only ate there once, but it was also good.

A fairly standard college hangout, but I thought Niffers had good burgers.

Never understood the allure of Momma G's, but our daughter still craves it. Nacho cheese Doritos with melted cheese on top.... SMH

Dreamland is the only correct answer for Tuscaloosa (original location).

Waysider for breakfast. But go early on gamedays or you won't get in.

I prefer Dreamland for barbecue, but make sure you go to the original location.

As already mentioned, Chuck's and 5 are excellent for fine dining. Rama Jama's has good burgers and is a fun visit but they're right across the street from the stadium so good luck getting in on gameday.

A personal local favorite of mine is Taco Casa, but it's fast food so don't expect anything fancy. Also don't expect it to taste like Mexican food. It's just it's own thing. I love it but it's very dependent on personal tastes.

The most old school solid Tuscaloosa establishments are

Breakfast : Waysider

Lunch/Dinner: Archibalds, Dreamland, Nicks in the Sticks, City Cafe

I can't speak to much built in the last decade. RIP Pepitos on the strip

And you better show up early. Or you'll be waiting for an hour or more.

Southern Ale House isn't downtown, but it's always delivered for me.

Willhagans if you want some good beer and solid bar food.

I still have never tried Avenue Pub. Kirk Herbstreit said that was his favorite place to eat on Gamedays, and I've yet to stop and eat there.

*edit- frick, you said you're taking kids. Just go to Archibalds.

The Original Dreamland BBQ out in the sticks is a must for visitors. The atmosphere and that sauce make it well worth the drive.

For your finer dining in AU, as has been said, Acre, Amsterdam, The Hound, Hamilton's are all good. Acre is my favorite at the moment.

For your more simple college like places, Mamma G's, Mike & Eds BBQ, Niffers, Naruto Cafe (looks weird, but trust me it is fantastic. Rice bowls are killer).

For your late night, my go to was Little Italy Pizzeria. Two Neapolitan slices with pepperoni and Italian sausage

We asked the owner about it one time, guy was straight from Japan. He called it that because that is what he thought college kids liked.
It even has Naruto blinds in the front windows. It is hilarious.

Really nice guy though. Food is fantastic. Chicken bowl is like $6 or was when I was there.

Best place to eat in Auburn imo is The Hound or Hamiltons on Magnolia. Amsterdam was ok but I guess I hyped it up too much. Bobs Victory Grille is good as well.

It is also worth the drive over to Opelika to the Irish Bread Pub. Fantastic fish and chips.

Yeah that place is pretty good too. Very unique experience.

I thought it was funny that Bob Baumhower had a restaurant in Auburn.

I never got the hype for Mama G's. it's good but the Mommas Love sandwich didn't knock my socks off or anything.

To each their own. I absolutely love them. Big Mama all the way and Nachos is just damn tasty IMO.

So many places to go in Gainesville: Gators' dockside, Ale house, Sweet Mel's, Boca Fiesta or The Top for some hipsters, and that doesn't count all the bullshite right across from campus in midtown like the swamp or salty dog. If you like beer you can go to a local brewery right near campus like First Magnitude or Swamp Head. There is a nice beer place called brass tap right by the high way, or you could go to House of beer downtown and then wander around and visit Loosey's. There is also nice whisky bar downtown now called the Whiskey lounge, and there is a distillery where you can drink yourself blind right across the street.

There are some very nice places to go and eat as well if you want some expensive fine dining. Marks, Manuels, Embers, etc.

There are also a lot of nice sushi places in town if that is your thing.

Gainesville has a lot of eating and drinking. A lot.

No Brand X pizza for Auburn? That place was the shiznit back when I visited Auburn friends while in college in the 90s...lol. They literally delivered at all hours

Another I'd add for Tuscaloosa that hasn't been mentioned yet:

Heat Pizza Bar - Very good new pizza place downtown with great beer selection. One of my favorite places in town now.
