in both the bottom of the 6th and 7th we had someone on base and hit rockets to the outfield that would have scored the runner, but they made great plays.

Answering my own question and presenting another. It appears that the "hand is part of the bat" idea is made up and hated by umps. Basically, if he swung or if the pitch was in the strike zone, it would have been a strike. Since the pitch was a ball, it was considered a hit batsman and he gets first base, which was the call in this game.
My new question regards a batter making an effort to get out of the way. As I understand it, a batter is required to make a reasonable effort to avoid being hit. Otherwise, it is a ball and the batter's at bat continues. How is throwing your hands at a pitch in a checked swing considered attempting to get out of the way when the ball would not have hit him if he had stood still?

Isn't the hand part of the bat? Why was that a hit batter in the top of the 5th instead of a foul ball when it definitely hit his hand on a swing/checked swing?

I was pleasantly surprised how many people showed up for the playoff this morning. Seemed to be a big crowd to watch 3 holes on a cool, windy Monday morning.

Just turning on the game. First play I watched was the last defensive possession. Dude grabbed CBM's shoulder with both hands and pulled him behind him. No basketball play at all. Has the whole game been like this?
