re: Who here plays instruments?

Guitar
Dobro
Lap steel
Piano
Harmonica
The hardest part is getting your name out there. Start small and keep at it. The gigs will come.
We started out doing restaurants, coffee shops, and damn hotel bars. Sizing down the band as we had to.
Put together a solid press kit through email (let em know style covers/originals timeframes) and blast email the shite out of places. Follow up with phone calls. Don’t let the gate keepers get ya down. They will absolutely be jerks at times. Just be relentless about it and prove em wrong once you finally get the gig.
You’ll get turned down more than you’ll get the gig, at first.
I love the pumpkins and have no interest in changing your mind. I will say that I’ve seen them twice and both times billy corgan came off as a whiny pretentious dork. I mean, I’m pretty sure that’s well known but…

There are family videos from back in the 80’s of me dancing to this song. I guess I was slightly obsessed with it as a small child. Hadn’t heard it for years and when my grandmother died, I had to drive her car back home to get some stuff, 3 hours away, and found this CD in her console.

Absolutely. Also, you don’t have to be OBESE to be addicted to food.

I have 2 altec Lansing hydrablasts. Only like $85 and sound great, so much so that I’m surprised they are under $120 or so.
They can connect/sync up and the kiddos love the flashing lights that sync with the music.

My band is more of a roots rock style band but that is pretty fluid. I have songs that are country/bluesy rock/folk/singer songwriter/ etc.
I never really write with a specific style in mind. I do add the progression, then take what I have to the band and we flesh it out as it needs to go.

ETA: all that to say, the vocal melody will and feel of the lyrics will give me the style

Well damn boys, I wanna hear some original tunes and lyrics. Hell, I’ll try and put some music to your lyrics if you’d like. I do that for a buddy of mine a good bit. He and I were play different styles so he likes hearing my interpretation.

I never thought I would be a songwriter (thought I may be too dumb for that). But, I always played some kind of instrument. Started with guitar, then harmonica and piano. A buddy kind of forced me into a songwriters group and next thing I know, I have a bit of a knack for it.
I’ve always been in bands and my current band does mostly originals that I’ve written. Hell, I’ve even had a couple make the radio (I’ve written some absolute stinkers, though). It’s really fun and I’m similar in that I love stringing lyrics/phrases together and putting music/melody to them.
Keep it up! You’re putting stuff into the world that did not exist before you. As I tell my bandmate, “there is no such thing as a bad lyric. Just a miss-used lyric”

For me it varies. There are times where a line/phrase pops into my head (that’s often because I have been listening to something different than normal). Other times I just sit with a guitar or at the piano and play through progressions and hum a vocal melody to it. Eventually, the lyrics come.

When I get in a rut, I listen to music that I normally don’t.

shite, that’s our first loss of the season.
My crazy doomsday prepper cousin has sent me everything off of the 4patriots site at least 6 different times now. So I guess I can use that dumb shite.

It’s been said but, if you don’t want to commit to taking lessons, I’d pick some a scale to learn in a certain key. Think country if that’s what you enjoy playing. Find a song you enjoy and the key it’s in and find some runs with a scale for it.

If that’s a little too much, maybe learn to walk up and down into chords.

These are ways I learned and still learn. Just have fun with it and start a molly hatchet cover band in a year or so.

My dental hygienist is hot as all hell but I’m pretty sure she is the worst dental hygienist on the planet. I’ve tried to go to another but….damn she’s hot.
This man has for sure been pegged by a hooker while on a business trip before
Absolutely not. My life’s motto is “frick em”.

My band does this song and be damned if folks don’t lose their minds every time we play it. It’s quite fun to play with a full band.

We got tickets today to see him in may in Little Rock. First time I saw him was at growlers in Memphis and there were maybe 15 folks there. He played it about 10 months later and it was packed to the gills. Both shows were equally bad arse.
