I ate at the table next to Coach O at Acme in Baton Rouge a few games after he took over as interim coach after Les was canned.

I was sitting with my boys at a Charleston Classic tournament several years ago and Tom Brennan and John Kresse (legend in Charleston) sat right behind us. It was cool hearing them diagnose what they would do. They weren't shy.

Bobby Cremins was sitting with Rick Barry a little further down.

Not really by chance since they were all basketball guys at a basketball tournament, but cool to see them all in there.

I saw Bobby Bowden at my high school in the parking lot when he came to recruit Warrick Dunn. Seen Will Wade going to his car once when picking up tickets. One of Dale Brown's staffers lived about 5 houses down from me when I was a kid so saw him over there every now and then.

Not necessarily a prominent coach, but saw Collis Temple and Garrett Temple at Gatti's buffet a couple of years ago.

Not a college coach, but Jerry Glanville sang "Knockin' on Heavens door" with my band in a bar in Myrtle Beach when he was coaching the Falcon's in the 90's.

One time, I saw this guy trying to change a $100 bill for a hundred singles at a bait store right outside Tuscaloosa.

I ran into Skip Bertman at a Verizon store in Baton Rouge a few years back. I asked him to take a picture with me. I took out my phone for the picture, but he slapped it out of my hand. He looked me up and down and said that I couldn't afford to do anything about it, and walked out of the store.

2008 I ran into Phil Fulmer at a steak restaurant in downtown K-Ville when I was there for work. Spoke briefly. He was nice.

I met a lot of the big name basketball coaches in the late 90's when I used to volunteer at Nolan Richardson's golf tournament at Pinnacle in Rogers. Most were great - especially Billy Tubbs and Tubby Smith. Worst - by far - was Dean Smith. Acted like he was doing everybody a favor just by being there. Had no desire to be around anyone "beneath" him.

Stood in line next to Bill Self getting into Game 6 of the 2014 World Series in KC. He was very nice and let me get a pic of him and my son.

Ran into Bert Bielema at the Catfish Hole in Fayetteville once. Nice guy.

Had dinner with Bobby Petrino and his wife at my in-laws' house. He had donated a dinner with him and Becky for an auction, and my father-in-law was the host. My wife and I got to go. I remember him being very friendly. It was in the late spring so camp was over. I think he had one more season at Arkansas before the Harley Davidson incident.

Spent the summer of '95 working for the U of A athletic department grounds crew. Danny Ford came out one day when we were tearing down an old storage shed at the end of one of the practice fields. The foreman was using a Ford Tractor and a chain to pull the shed down. The shed was putting up a pretty good fight. Danny starts yelling, "If you were using a G-D John Deere, that thing would be on the ground by now!"

Houston Dale Nutt and his mama were eating at US Pizza on Rodney Parham a few years back. I didn't bother them.

When I was in grad school (95-ish), I went to a Lady Razorbacks basketball game and then went to Dickson St afterward to hear the Cate Brothers at Chester's. Walk in and see Gary Blair (Hogs coach then but now at TAMU), and Vic Schaefer (maybe SFA then and now at uTexas), sitting at a table having beers. I walked over to tell Gary Blair that I enjoyed watching his freshman PG, Christy Smith play. He seemed flattered that I went to his games and knew his players' names. He and Vic invited me to sit with them, and the beers were on them. Good dudes.

I saw Coach Vince Dooley, with a couple of people, eating at a Chick-Fil-A in Suwanee, GA. He was not coaching then but I don't remember if he was still AD at Georgia.

My son was/is a big hockey fan. We were at a Cracker Barrel in Suwanee, Ga once and he says do you know who that guy is, pointing out a man and his family eating. I said "I have no clue." He said "he is the head coach of the Atlanta Thrashers Hockey team." I laughed and said that I bet he was the only guy in Gwinnett County that knew that. I never could get into hockey.

That was the Golden Nugget. He was there ALL weekend, in AUGUST, crushing red bulls. I was waiting to hear Monday that they had cancelled the season due to Covid. Why else would he be in Lake Charles, all weekend, the week before the season opener doing nothing football related?

In the mid 80s, I saw Sonny Smith trying to get a very drunk Jim Fyffe into a van at the Sylacauga, AL KFC.

They, like us, were buying chicken on the way to the NASCAR race at Talladega.

Jim was saying over and over “Sonny, we don’t have enough chicken. Sonny, we’re gonna need more chicken” and trying to go back into the store. Sonny was dragging him by the arm saying “just get in the damn van Jim.”

It was hilarious and completely innocent. Today it would be a social media scandal.

I bumped into Brian Van Gorder shopping at restoration hardware. not by chance, but Ive met saban a few times at charity events. I know the daughters of three different ex NFL head coaches as well. One of them flew us(10 people) up to watch a game one time was pretty cool of him.

I saw Mike Archer on the way out of Legion Field in Birmingham after the Hall of Fame Bowl in the ‘80s. He was in the concessions area by himself.

Met Pat Summit and her family by chance in Rosemary Beach in 2010. She was very down to earth and had a hilarious dry sense of humor.
several others and myself had dinner with pat summit, multiple times. i was just a kid, but i remember thinking how crazy it was to see pat summit sitting there drinking a cup of post-meal coffee and shooting the shite.

i was leaving class one day on campus and almost ran over dan mullen the first year he was in starkville. he ran right out in front me, jaywalking son of a bitch. then he had the audacity to get mad at me for his stupidity.
