This one is interesting. He entered the portal and will not play against Ole Miss in the bowl game. So he went from backing up Ewers at horn, to leading Duke to 9-3, and back to the portal.

I’m assuming he’s expecting to jump to a contender like Oregon once Gabriel leaves, or would he go to an Auburn? Hmm why leave Duke?

It is interesting that we are starting to see more and more guys who are starters that are entering the portal and shopping themselves to see if they can get more cash from another team.

It’s like he doesn’t think playing at Duke will get him drafted, or something, bc this move screams NIL vs going somewhere to win or get drafted.

Do these kids have Agents in their ear? Someone is giving these kids advice.

I have mixed feelings about this. From the players standpoint, I believe they have an obligation when they accept a scholarship to a school to compete throughout the current season. I think the answer to this and guys like the UNLV QB should be that the “release”‘system needs to be brought back. If a player refuses to participate in a postseason game at his current school, he is ineligible for postseason at his new school unless he gets a release.

UGA, A&M, Miami, Oklahoma, Auburn, maybe Bama will be all over this QB.

I assume he's leaving Duke for more money and to play for a more prestigious program.

We are going after the UAB QB Zeno bc he has an accurate ball, can run, and is very experienced. I know Lane is going after the Liberty QB. These guys are a little more dual threat than Murphy.

Murphy is going to be a plug in starter for a pass pro friendly offense imo. And like you said. It will be either an NIL deal or some blue blood or more prestigious program than Duke at football in need of a starter he ends up at.

Why stay at Duke?

This isn't basketball. Duke isn't a powerhouse full of talent. Better supporting casts make quarterbacks look better. This isn't very difficult to figure out.

Also more money.

Chance to negotiate another NIL deal.

This is also why bowls are a shite show.

Neither team in the gator bowl will have a qb that started all year.

This just screws the fans who bought tickets, plane tickets and hotel rooms.

Can this guy throw?

Can he play QB?

Is he a passer first, runner second?

If so, we have some receivers who can catch.

This shows why you will be unable to rebuild or build up a program under current rules.

Can you imagine what a time we would have had keeping Kevin Faulk after his first year at LSU in this climate? Big schools come in, you can transfer right away, play for a national championship, and get paid big bucks. It's crazy.

Least accurate passer in the Power 4 under pressure last year

19/69 (27.5%)
439 yards (6.4 YPA)
6 TD / 4 INT
58.4 QB Rating
9% Turnover Worthy Throw Rate

3rd least accurate passer on intermediate routes in the Power 4 last year

36/92 (39.1%)
672 yards (7.3 YPA)
4 TD / 5 INT
57.0 QB Rating

57% of his throws at are or behind the line of scrimmage. He's a chuck it deep or throw a screen guy. I've seen enough of that, no thanks.

He’s not a runner at all. Big strong arm. I didn’t think of him as anything more than a backup while at Texas. He was on a developmental track and maybe he’s had a breakthrough, but I don’t see him as QB1 at a program like Alabama. Maybe A&M.

As someone who watches a lot of Duke football due to familial ties, he is fricking horrible.

In his season backing up Ewers, Murphy made some inexplicably inaccurate/stupid throws. He also was injured in high school and didn't play a whole season because of the injury/covid. Murphy really doesn't have as much game experience as you would expect.

Huge arm talent, but definitely he carries some risk for whatever program snaps him up.

Reddit said Duke has a large NIL fund. He was offered 3M to stay.

Maalik is a California kid, and North Carolina is all the timezones away from home.

I think Lanning swings a little higher if he dips into the portal for a QB, but I think Maalik is looking for a west coast school to take him.

Then don't go. The fan/the customer holds all the power. Just don't go. If enough people don't show up and the stadiums are empty, they go away.

He had -79 rushing yards if that answers your question.

Malik Murphy is one of the most pure pocket passers you’ll see.
