When Auburn was screwed out a national championship in 1983, you guys had six national championships (a very impressive number already).

When I returned to Auburn in August of 1984, you guys had 11 national championships. IMO, all were legitimate claims with the exception of 1941...which you should have replaced with 1966...possibly the biggest MNC screwjob of all-time...and this is coming from an Auburn grad.
That is what makes it so comical when bammers want to make fun of Auburn claiming other national championships besides 1957 (my Dad was a QB on that team) and 2010. FTR, while I absolutely agree with claiming 1910, 1913, 1914, 1983 and 2004, I do not agree with claiming 1958 or 1993. In 1958, LSU was undefeated and Auburn had one tie after Dad threw an interception against Georgia Tech late in the game which ended 7-7. In 1993, while we did go undefeated, because of probation, we did not play the SEC Championship game or a bowl game. Had we played both and won, I would agree with the choice.
Just my two cents....

Tennessee claimed the 1938, 1940, 1950, and 1967 titles in 1968... after failing to win any major poll title in '67. They just claimed it themselves and decided to claim 4 others they didn't win while at it.

I don't like that Auburn did this... but we are no different than those programs and others who have been doing it for years.
I can at least explain the logic used back when Alabama did it...
In the modern era, all but one (post-1936) are based on winning either the AP or Coaches'/UPI poll. The 1941 is based on the Houlgate system, and to this day I have no idea why Houlgate thinks we were best or why the person who was researching it. My understanding is that Houlgate was pretty respectable at the time, but was definitely a weird miss for our 1941 season; however, that's why we don't claim 1945 nor 1966 - none of the major polls, and not Houlgate (which ended by 1958, so their last champion was LSU) picked us either of those undefeated years. Houlgate *IS* considered a "major" selector by the NCAA, so that may be the reason it was chosen.
The pre-poll titles (1925, 1926, 1930, 1934), the requirements Alabama self-imposed were basically to go undefeated and win or tie the Rose Bowl. Alabama won three of those Rose Bowls and tied one, going 10-0, 9-0-1, 10-0, and 10-0 during those seasons.
Since 1992 it's been Bowl Coalition / Bowl Alliance / BCS, then playoffs.

If they can claim that then we need to claim our ours. 1921 and 1922 I think.

Penn State.
In my mind (having watching that season live), I still think of Penn State as a co-champ too. They had just as good a season, and as I recall that team was loaded.
